The photographs feature the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, Adelaide Zoo, the Eden Hills railway viaduct, countryside near the Gemmell's home at Bugle Range and scenes along the Murray River. An Australian soldier plays the Last Post on a bugle at the South Australian National War Memorial during a memorial service for Indigenous Veterans held on 30th May 2008. It is estimated that about 500 Aboriginal Australians served in World War I and more than 3,000 served in World War II.

Half-plate glass negative of an unknown army bandsman in World War One Australian military uniform including a peaked cap and boots. He is holding a bugle in one hand, has a braided lanyard attached from his collar to epaulette, and has two corporal's chevrons on his sleeve. He is standing outdoors in a field. Written in pencil on the edge of the glass plate: 'Bandsman Gotees [?] 24/10'. Possibly a corporal from the 10th Infantry Battalion, 24th Reinforcements.

Sir Josiah Symon K.C. presents the 9th Reinforcements of the 27th Battalion with two flags and three bugles at a ceremony in front of the Mitcham camp headquarters. The mementoes were received on behalf of the men by Lieutenant Arthur Roland Burton.

[On back of photograph] 'South Australian contingent at the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, London 1897. Drafted from mounted units from various parts of S.A. Under the command of Lieut. Col. James Rowell (sitting in centre), on his right is Capt. Wilson, of Mt Gambier, left is Lieut. Hay. Sitting on the ground, from left to right, are Sergeant J.E. Rowell; Trumpeter Davis; and Sergeant Major de Passey. For a list of those who were selected to form the contingent see Observer, 24 April 1897, page 31, column d'.

Parade of Junior Constables. In 1934 a Junior Constable training course was introduced in South Australia. In the photograph several of the constables are playing the bugle. The Police Band was a part-time unit which at this time consisted of mainly Junior Constables. It was housed at Thebarton Police Barracks. Other constables were housed at the Port Adelaide Police Depot in primitive buildings with poor amenities and bad hygiene.

New civilian recruits for Army service during World War I marching along a road in South Australia escorted by a uniformed soldier; four of their number stand in the front, three holding bugles up to their mouths and the fourth playing a small drum. The officer on the far side of the group (near the third row) is Robert Conroy Parrott (see also PRG 280/1/18/8 and B 23141); the location of the photo is probably Mitcham Camp (based on Parrott's career); and the date around 1915 (based on the fact he is still wearing his old pre-war 74th Militia hat and jacket).
