A family poses for the photographer in front of the Mounted Police Barracks Armoury (on the right) and the Colonial Store (or Destitute Asylum), on the left. (For site see map of Adelaide in 1871 Almanack.) These buildings face south and are about 120 yards north of North Terrace. The extreme left is 70 yards east of Kintore Avenue. The near side of the building on the extreme right is 158 yards east of Kintore Avenue. The open space is the site of the Parade Ground.

Mounted Police barracks armoury showing the stairway removed in July-August, 1958. Designed by the Colonial Architect W. Bennett Hayes, and built by contractor W. Lines, the building was completed in 1855, and the staircase was part of additions made in 1859. For site, see note on back of B 3181. Shown on plan (A 559) as building 17, south frontage.

Mounted Police Barracks Dormitory, Port Road, Southwark, built in 1939. The stark three storey red brick building has continuous balconies on both floors providing external access to the dormitories.

The stairway in front of the Armoury was removed July-August, 1958.The Armoury and Inspector's residences, although built for the Police Force became part of military history when contingents left from here for the Boer War. The mounted police vacated the premises in 1921 and the rooms were used by the Teacher's Training College and the Children's Library.

Former Mounted Police Barracks, west side of quadrangle in the 1920's. During the 1920's this building was used to house an annex of the Adelaide Teachers College. Several men and women can be seen under the verandahs and on the balcony of this building.

This view was taken inside the quadrangle looking south-east, it shows a verandah subsequently removed; a new lean-to structure was erected by October 23rd,1954, for the S.A.Museum. The archway to the left was renovated between October and November 1968
