Half plate glass plate negative of G.N. Bagshaw, 1st Australian Imperial Force. A researcher has suggested that this may be Private James Melville Bagshaw, No. 2076 from York Town, South Australia, enlisted on 27 March 1916 with the 5th Pioneer Battalion, Reinforcement 3, and embarked from Adelaide on board the HMAT 'Seang Bee' on 13 July 1916, returning to Australia on 1 August 1919.

John Stokes Bagshaw arrived in South Australia in June 1838 on board the ship the "Eden". Millwright, engineer, machinery manufacturer.

John Stokes Bagshaw

John Stokes Bagshaw trained as a millwright, engineer and patternmaker in England and migrated to South Australia in 1838. He set up flour mills and made windmills. He invented the winnowing machine. He built a "stripper" reaping machine for John Ridley in 1843. He built many farm machines. He also founded Trinity Church on North Terrace, the Ancient London Order of Oddfellows in Adelaide, he was elected to the Adelaide Municipal Council in 1870 and was a member of the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society

John Stokes Bagshaw

John Stokes Bagshaw, (1808-1888) manufacturer of agricultural machinery arrived in South Australia in 1838. He built flour mills ar Noarlunga, Port Noarlunga and Encounter Bay. In 1839 he established an agricultural implement workshop in Adelaide catering for farmer's needs. He was founder of Oddfellows in SA and was active in Trinity Church affairs. He was prominent in Health and Public Works for the Gawler Ward of Adelaide Council.

[General description] Two cars are parked in front of this new building which is finished with cement render and has large plate glass windows. This well-known Adelaide firm, which manufactured agricultural implements, was started by John Bagshaw in 1939. He built Ridley's stripper and designed Australia's frst winnowing machine, sold under the trademark 'Champion'. In 1924 J.H. Horwood joined the firm. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 112 / Currie Street, north side / June 24, 1926 / Horwood's show rooms erected in 1926. For view of premises formerly on the seit see B 2821. / Left side of Horwoods is 14 yards east of Kingston Street. Frontage is 18 yards.'

Currie Street, north side, left side of Horwood Bagshaw is 14 yards east of Kingston Street and frontage is 18 yards. Horwood Bagshaw's showroom was erected in 1926. For a view of the premises formerly on this site see B 2821. Horwood Bagshaw was a well known firm of agricultural engineers selling farm machinery. Horace R Horwood retired from the firm in 1953. Around 1960 the company was acquired by David Shearer of Mannum.

Bagshaw Chaffcutter and elevator 1904-5 Model K.G.A., No 956, Serial No 3325. Bought secondhand for 11 pounds or $22 on 1 May, 1915, from Mr Hancock who lived where the Flinders University is now. Cut at a capacity of 30 to 40 cwt. an hour. Driven off an Oil Engine made by Ruston, Procton [r?] & Co., engineers of Lincoln, England. Distributed in Australia by H.V. McKay. Bought brand new about 1915 although it was a model made about 1902/3.
