Unveiling the Flinders Memorial tablet at Encounter Bay

Part of the ceremony of unveiling the Memorial tablet to Matthew Flinders on the summit of the Bluff, Encounter Bay; two views featuring H.E. the Governor, Lord Tennyson, Lady Tennyson, C. Tucker, M.P. and other dignitaries, April 8th 1902. According to a researcher, the gentlemen, without a hat, in the centre, reading from notes, is Simpson Newland, 1835 - 1925, pioneer, pastoralist, politician and author.

The Victor Harbor Branch raised $900 at its annual fund raiser held in the RAOB hall. Members joined in the spirit of the occasion by wearing World War I and II uniforms. In the happy group are Mesdames Ashby (left), S. Johns, L. West, E. Waye, G. Ellis, I. Streeter, C. Lindholm, J. Webb, Dr Clarke and R. Rumbelow.
