On the shore, Glenelg, Adelaide, S.A
Photograph in postcard format of a yacht at water's edge, surrounded by a curious crowd. There are two jetties in the background, which were works jetties to support the construction of the Glenelg Breakwater from 1914 until around 1918. The closer jetty has concrete caissons on rails along its decking. The casting plant for the caissons can be seen on the right of the photograph, which was located in the 'works depot', situated in part of Wigley Reserve. A third jetty was constructed about 1916 to accommodate a locomotive and trucks for the carriage of rubble to the breakwater site, and shovelled into the concrete caissons by hand [information supplied by a researcher].

[Annotations on the back of the photograph suggest that the workers were employed under a job sharing scheme as a result of the depression.] The footpath work is being undertaken outside the Art Gallery with a wheel barrow and public seats in the foreground; a sign for the museum, a tram and the statue of Venus are all visible in the background.
