King William Street, Adelaide, looking south from near the intersection with North Terrace toward the intersection of Rundle Street and Hindley Street. Buildings in the foreground on the eastern side of King William Street are the National Bank and Beehive Corner and on the western side are the English, Scottish and Australian Bank and the Australian Mutual Provident (AMP) Society. The street is busy with horse drawn vehicles and pedestrians. A telegraph pole and wires also dominates the foreground. The Adelaide Town Hall clock tower can be seen in the distance. A banner advertising the play 'Sweet Nell of Old Drury' which was presented at the Theatre Royal, Hindley Street, from 28 April 1902 to 9 May 1902 is visible in high resolution scans. The horse trams are lunch time 'specials', which did not stop, and two pedestrians can be seen running to board the moving tram. Many city workers went home for lunch at this time [additional information provided by a researcher].

View looking south-east over Adelaide, from a vantage point on the Treasury Building on the corner of King William and Flinders Streets. St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral (city acre 338) can be seen on the right, with the Prince of Wales Hotel in Angas Street beyond that; to the left along Wakefield Street is the back of the Unitarian Church (with a square tower, city acre 302) and across the street is St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (city acre 340). In the left foreground in Flinders Street are premises of a cooperage business and T. Hill's billiard, cabinet maker, upholsterer and undertaker building. The Halifax Street brickworks chimney can be seen in the middle ground, with the Adelaide Hills in the distance. The photo is signed in the bottom right corner: 'Adelaide 1865 / Frances Photo'.

Views mostly in South Australia, including public buildings in Adelaide, the Government Printing Office and its staff (on the annual wayzgoose); several churches and schools, including North Adelaide Model School (1877) and Norwood Model School; Zoo, Botanic Gardens, Torrens lake and Survey yard (B 9126), Adelaide Oval (B 34610/31), Torrens lake and Adelaide Oval (B 34610/38), and several views of exhibits thought to be for the Adelaide Jubilee International Exhibition (1887). Views in the Adelaide Hills include Beetaloo water works, Government Farm, Belair, Mt Lofty, the Hills railway line. The album contains several photographs of the lava terraces in New Zealand. These have not been digitised. A selection of South Australian views have been separately described and digitised. View these by searching on Archival number B 34610 and then by viewing each record nos 1- 47. The remaining South Australian photographs have copies held elsewhere in the Pictorial Collection (numbers are noted in the album). These and all other photographs, including a group portrait of Aboriginal people (B 34610/3) can be viewed by requesting the album. The images comprise businesses and buildings in the Victor Harbor township, memorials and the bowling green. Includes a football team and other townspeople. The negatives were originally from Charles Hoffmann [assumed to be Hoffmann Photographics, Victor Harbor].
