[General description] This photograph shows the Adelaide Railway Station, built in 1856, after alterations made in 1878 when a second storey was added. It is a stone building with red brick dressings with a large arched portico and wide verandahs. A decorative wrought iron railing runs along the roof ridge. See B 9875 for the original building.

South Australian Institute

South Australian Institute Building on North Terrace was the focal point in Adelaide's cultural life. It is a typical example of a Victorian building in the Renaissance style. Its central entrance hallway featured a grand stairway. The ground floor housed the circulating library, a large reading room, coffee room also used for lectures and a boardroom. Upstairs were three large rooms intended for classes and meetings. At the time of this photograph the lighting in the reading room and air conditioning devices were replaced.

Eastern side of Victoria Square seen from the top of the Treasury Building. King William Street divides the two sides of the square. Wakefield Street divides the garden into halves which are fenced with iron pailings and contain benches and shrubs. The Law Courts and Supreme Court Buildings can be seen at the southern end of the square and the Torrens Building is on the eastern side.

[General description] Civic buildings including the Post Office, Town Hall and Treasury Buildings form a backdrop to the Victoria Square Gardens where two men pose for the photographer. At this time there is a metal fence around the square which predates the later wrought iron railings. Victoria Park Racecourse was the first official race track in South Austrarlia. Races were run here since 1846. The Grandstand, built in 1882 shows quality in its design and construction. It is a two storey bluestone building with red brick dressings, timber and cast iron detailing and ornate staircases. A white picket fence lines the race track. A few chimneys can be seen in the background but mainly the undeveloped grassy plains stretch up towards the hills.

The iron barque 'Arabella', 700 tons, loading wool at Ninety Mile Beach, Western Australia [iron barque, 688 gross (upon sale foreign became 700) ON62880, 177.6 x 31.0 x 17.4. Built 1876 (2). Bartram, Haswell and Co. Sunderland. Owners: TE Hick, registered Scarborough. c. 1895 Trinder Anderson and Co. Ltd. c. 1901/2 to Swedish owners without change of name. While the property of Trinder Anderson was well known in the UK-Western Australia trade. This photograph shows the stern view of the 'Arabella'] She is beached and a team of oxen are pulling wool bales to be loaded on to the ship before high tide.

The "Harbinger" in the old basin at Port Adelaide. Buller and Conrad served on this ship. This iron ship of 1473 tons was built in 1876 at Greeock. Said to have been the last sailing ship built to carry passengers in the Australian trades, and constructed especially to try and outdo the "Torrens". She did not remain long in the South Australian trade, but became very popular in the Melbourne run

The "California" at Table Bay. This four masted steel barque of 3099 tons was built in 1890 in Belfast. She visited South Australia in the 1890s.
