[General description] This delicate glass building, generally known as the Palm House, was designed by Gustav Runge in Bremen, Germany, transported to South Australia in kit form and assembled in 1876. It was thought at the time that palms would only grow under glass in Adelaide's climate. Botanical Gardens, Adelaide. This photograph shows a man looking at the well- tended flower beds in the Botanic Gardens in the 1890's. Hooped railings surround the beds and depict the pathways through the gardens. The Amazon statue can be seen in the background sitting upon its plinth. This depicts the goddess on horseback defending herself from a tiger by using a spear. Local residents organised a public subscription in 1867 to raise funds for two new statues, one of which was The Amazon.

Botanic Gardens showing members of the Ladies Boating Club season 1895-96. Photographed on the south bank of the Torrens, east of the Morphett Street Bridge. The ladies are wearing a uniform consisting of straw boater hats with hatbands, white blouses, neck ties, long skirts and are sitting in the reeds on the bank of the River Torrens. They are holding two club flags.

Botanic Gardens in 1872-86 showing a fountain spurting into the lake which is surrounded by willows and reeds. When reticulated water was connected to the Gardens in 1860 the Owens Fountain, created as a feature on the main path, was opened in 1861.

Director's residence, Botanic Gardens between 1872-1886. The two storey house in the background is clad with creepers. A path bordered by lush gardens leads to the house. A statue and a rock garden are situated on this path.

Botanic Gardens photographed approximately between 1872 and 1886. The photograph shows ornamental flower beds shaped in ovals and diamond shapes. Gravel paths, lawns and small shrubs complete the scene. A round pond can be seen in the middle of the main path. This is possibly the Owen Fountain, named after its benefactor, which was installed after reticulated water was supplied to North Terrace in December 1860.

Botanic Gardens taken between 1872 and 1886. A giant urn on a pedestal stands in the centre of surrounding flower beds. George William Francis was appointed superintendent of the garden in 1855. His vision for the gardens can still be seen in the formation of the Main Walk which dissects the gardens from north to south. The photograph shows a rockery, palms, lawns and firs in the distance.

Botanic Gardens new Palm House was constructed in 1875 following Director Dr Richard Schomburgk decision that the existing Palm House was over crowded, and is perhaps the only surviving example of German cast iron/wrought iron conservatory architecture in Australia.
