The steel 4 masted barque 'Hougomont', 2428 tons, in an unidentified port [steel 4 mast barque, 2428 tons. ON106093. 292.4 x 43.2 x 24.1. Built 1897 Scott and Co. Greenock. Owners: J Hardie and Co. Registered Glasgow. After WW1 passed to Gustav Eriksson and was employed in the Australia grain trade. Dismasted on her passage to South Australia in 1932. Spent some time anchored off Semaphore while awaiting a decision for her fate, but repairs proving to be too expensive in Australia she was taken and scuttled as a breaker in Stenhouse Bay].

The wooden brigantine 'Camilla', 190 tons, at Port Adelaide in the 1880's. [wooden 2 mast brigantine, later 2 mast schooner, 201 tons, 1861 = 190 tons. ON32403 85.9 x 23.6 x 14.5. Built 1834 R Menzies and Son. Leith from 1848, at least, owned by Elder and Son, registered Kirkcaldy, 1851 the executives of Charles Rawlings, registered Hobart Town, June 1851 Charles Hartram, June 1853 Peter Imlay (Twofold Bay NSW), registered Melbourne 1855, George Barclay (Eden NSW), reg Sydney June 1861 John Clinch and Partners registered Hobart Town c.1875 w. Belbin and partners. No trace after 1890 and probably dismantled. From at least 1861 engaged in whaling industry. It is sometimes claimed John Bickers held a share in the vessel in 1849 although there is no evidence that he did - he was master of the vessel when it arrived in Port Adelaide in 1849 with migrants and he also named his home in Semaphore for this ship. 'Lark' wooden schooner 139 tons aground at Port Adelaide, possibly following her collision with ss 'Darwin' at Semaphore Feb. 1890 [wooden 3 mast schooner, 179 gross, 139 net tons. ON93563. 108.0 x 22.4 x 10.6. Built 1881 Westacott and Sons, Barnstaple. First registered at Sydney in 1887. At Fremantle in 1897, at Port Adelaide in 1899 by Messrs. Seymour and in Nov. 1900. Owned by JJ Craig, the vessel was registered in Auckland. That register closed in 1909 with 'Broken up'.

Banner of the Australasian Society of Engineers

Banner of the Australasian Society of Engineers used in street processions. In 1912, the union determined that their organisation needed their own, distinctive, banner, with this decision reported in Adelaide's 'Daily Herald', 4 April 1912: 'The Australasian Society of Engineers has decided to have a new banner for the next eight hours procession. At last night's meeting of the society it was resolved that a gold medal should be offered for the best style of banner. The secretary is now prepared to accept and design from those wishing to enter into the competition.3 The banner selected was made in 1912 by the artist and later signwriter, Christoper William McLennan (1874-1933), who lived and worked in the Port Adelaide and Semaphore area.

Spotswood family

Spotswood (originally Spottiswoode) family. On the left (standing) is the eldest son John who married Ann Kirby. Seated is a cousin, Emma Wilson. Standing is Elizabeth Sophie who married George Warren Smith of Port Adelaide and is the mother of Vernon Smith. In the centre is Thomas Hugh Spotswood, who married Rebecca Porter and after she died married her sister. Seated is Kate Wilson, cousin of R.K. Spotswood, and she married Walter Kemp of Rhynie. Standing at right is Richard Keane Spotswood junior who married Lucy Smith, sister of George Warren Smith, and also married Constance Cooper after her death.
