New bridge in the Torrens Gorge

A crowd at the opening of a new bridge over the Onkaparinga River at Clarendon which was opened on 17 July 1919. See Chronicle, Saturday 26 July 1919, p30, for an almost identical photo, in which the leading car has moved off. According to a researcher this design of bridge, by D.V. Fleming, was replicated in a number of locations, including along the Torrens Gorge Road. Fleming was at this time the Assistant Engineer for Roads and Bridges, and he later became the first Commissioner of Highways. With its deep arch, the Clarendon bridge more closely resembles Batchelors Bridge which is now submerged in the Kangaroo Creek reservoir.

On 20 April 1919 Major J. Wood (Pilot) and Captain C. Wylie (Navigator) took off from Eastchurch, England, on the first stage of their attempt to fly cross the Atlantic. The engines on their Short Brothers flying boat failed over the Irish Sea and they ditched near Anglesey. The two men were rescued and their aircraft was towed into Holyhead.
