Peterborough railway yard, showing the roundhouse in course of construction. The building is a large timber-framed structure built in a semicircle. It originally comprised 22 bays. A feature of each bay is the concrete pit used for inspecting and repairing rolling stock. The Roundhouse was built in 1925 as part of the Webb initiative to upgrade the South Australian Railways. It is one of the few surviving roundhouses in the state and certainly the largest. The building has a saw-tooth roof profile and is remarkable for its semi-circular design and construction. The nearby turnatable enabled several rails to cope with three gauges
