Diary of a trip in Central Australia by Ernest Kramer

Manuscript notes about a trip by Ernest Kramer between 20 May and 2 July 1931 out west of Alice Springs, with party of 5 Aboriginal men, 8 camels and 4 donkeys. Places visited included Glen Helen Station, Haast Bluff, Mount Liebig, Mount Davenport, Mount Russell, Mount Lyell Brown and Mount Peculiar, and Hermannsburg Mission. The diary includes the Aboriginal names of these places visited, details of the tracking ability of the men, and meetings with isolated Aboriginal family groups. (Another European, Pastor Friedrich Albrecht, became seriously ill at beginning of the trip and had to be taken back.) Sketches in ink and pencil by Kramer show notable mountain ranges. (29 pages).

In two volumes (chapters 1-22 & 23-45), it comprises typescript pages, with illustrations provided by both original photographs and material cut from newspapers and journals, all with identification. There are numerous handwritten amendments to the text throughout. See below for further detail.

Jewellery (earrings) referred to in 'Millbrae and its founding family' by May Mills (Adelaide, Lutheran Publishing House, 1973, p.49). According to Mr Dick Richards, the ear rings are Japanese [now mounted on chains to be worn as necklaces] and the jade box probably dates from ca.1900.

Glass lantern slides featuring Aboriginal people and missions

Comprising hand-coloured lantern slides of the Kramer Family Missionary work among Aboriginal people in the centre and northern Australia (also includes a small number of slides from Papua New Guinea), plus the Kramer Family abroad. Lantern slides include Hermannsburg Mission garden, the first church built at Alice Springs, and their first home 'Ebenezer'. Most images are of Arrernte (Aranda) people from Alice Springs and central Australia including Hermannsburg (Ntaria) on the Finke River. There are some images from Mapoon (also known as Marpuna or the Batavia River Mission), Queensland and some images from Groote Eylandt, north eastern Australia, encompassing Angurugu, Alyangula and Umbakumba. Anindilyakwa / Enindhilyagwa / Warnindilyakwa people and including Yolgnu people. Many of the lantern slides have been hand-coloured. The slides were likely to have been used for lectures and/or presentations for Mission circuits and the public. There are a small number of slides taken whilst on family holidays, likely to be in locations overseas, for example Switzerland and Europe. For more details and information see CONTENTS.

Two overpainted photographs of Johann Heinrich (John Henry) Schneider and his wife Henrietta Augusta Wilhelmina, nee Fischer. They were married on 10 October 1861 at the Lutheran Chapel, Klemzig. Mr Schneider died at Prospect in 1902 after his wife predeceased him in 1898 at Reeves Plains. See MORE INFO 'Contents' for details.
