This scientific exploring expedition took place in central and northern Western Australia in 1896 and 1897, using camels as the principal means of transport. Members of the expedition were Larry Wells (leader), Charles Wells (his cousin and second in command), George Jones (mineralogist and photographer), George Keartland (naturalist), James Trainor with Dervish Bejah and Said Ameer (camel drivers) and 20 camels.

Drumcalpin horses. The man holding a horse in the cente of the photo is Henry Murdock Mackenzie, who worked for the railways at Merildin and apparently spent time at Drumcalpin. He was a 'horse handler' from an early age in the Royal Horse Artillery, serving around the world in the British military. He migrated in 1910 to South Australia with his brother, where he married Neen (Elizabeth Jones) at Maughan Church on 8 August 1914 prior to being returned to England initially as an artillery instructor, but later serving on the western front in the artillery.
