Cornelius Proud

Cornelius Proud

Cornelius Proud, born Bickerton, Yorkshire, on 22 September 1853, the son of William and Ann Proud. He arrived South Australia with his wife, Mary Ann nee Lines, and brother, John Henry Proud, in 1875. Following the death of Mary Ann, he married Emily Good in 1882. Initially employed on the literary staff of the Register newspaper he was a founding member and Honorary Secretary of the Adelaide Stock Exchange in 1883, he then spent the years 1885 to 1890 in Broken Hill during the silver boom. In 1894 he delivered the Women's Suffrage petition to the South Australian Parliament.

Victor York Richardson

A caricature by Lionel Coventry of Victor York Richardson, sportsman and radio commentator. Victor York Richardson scored 27 centuries in first-class cricket, represented Australia at baseball, South Australia at golf and tennis, and excelled at lacrosse, basketball, and swimming. He captained South Australia and Australia at cricket, a South Australian captain of football, and an outstanding gymnast, athlete, and hockey player. He later became a journalist and a radio commentator.

The Royal Midgets General & Mrs Mite

The Royal Midgets General & Mrs Mite

Emily (aka Millie) Edwards and Francis Joseph Flynn. Also known as General and Mrs Mite, Flynn was born in New York in 1872. In 1884 he married Edwards in England. They came to Australia in 1890 to tour. Flynn died in Broken hill in 1898. Millie moved to New Zealand and continued to perform under the name Mrs General Mite. She died in an acccident in Christchurch, New Zealand, on 16 December 1919, and is buried in Bromley Cemetery.

A researcher suggests that the small steamer is the "SS Nelcebee", built in Port Adelaide in 1883. When this photo was taken the ship was based in Port Pirie and owned by the Adelaide Steam Tug Company. She was taken out of service in 1928 and converted to an auxiliary cargo sailing vessel, and was used like this until 1982, when the vessel was gifted to the South Australian Maritime Museum. The vessel survives on dry land at Port Adelaide.
