Each medal has '2885 Pte B. C. Herman, 10/BN. AIF' engraved on the back or rim. Also comprising a golden fob watch with decorative engraving on the front and back and Roman numerals on the clock face. ca.1918.

The dark clock face indicates that this photo was taken before December 13th, 1875 when the clock was set in motion. The new clock faces were made of Chance's white opal glass and illuminated at night.

King William Street, looking south from North Terrace. This photograph shows the view from the intersection of King William Street and North Terrace. The road appears to be very wide and the buildings on the eastern corner include Academy on the corner, Civil and Military Engineering Institute, Adelaide Gymasium, Hunt's Original and a large grocery store with several people waiting outside. The Town Hall clock tower can be seen in the distance minus it's clock. Apparently the intended clock was given to Trinity Church instead. Various shops and businesses line the western side of King William Street. Horses and carriages wait at the side of the street.

[General description] Town Hall, Glenelg. This building, with its two stories of wide verandahs was designed by Edmund Wright for use as an Institute, without the clock and tower which were added at a later time. The Glenelg Council bought the building in 1887 for use as a Town Hall. See B 43098 for a view of the building before the clock was added.

Kadina Town Hall

Kadina Town Hall

[General description] The Heritage listed Kadina Town Hall, designed by John Gaskell was built in stages, the first storey completed in 1880. The second was added in 1898 along with the balcony and ornamental gable. The clock tower was constructed in 1903 to house a clock donated by businessman Daniel Squibb. The Council was struggling to find the revenue to pay for the tower so on its completion Mr. Squibb paid for it as well.

Church of the Holy Evangelist at Goolwa. Land was granted for the building of the church in 1857. The church bell was one of the heaviest and was presented in 1897 by Liet. Col. Higgins. The church was built of travertine limestone and has a limestone clock tower with a spire. The tower was completed in 1905 and the clock installed in 1905. The church opened in 1868.

[General description] Moonta's Town Hall is a solid stone building with a corner clock tower and a widows walk. Some men, probably officials stand in front of the building, another man appears to be working on the roof. Smeaton, Adelaide / Contractors Pollard & Cowling, Moonta / First cost 3,500 pounds / Clock tower added in 1907 by public subscription (vide Mr. O. Old building on left is on the site of the present Jens Hotel, first two storey building on right used to be Cornelius Boarding House and tea rooms. Long since removed by A Ruberkonic as a coffee palace. Now owned by Mrs Jens and used as part of her hotel across the road. The second two storey building on the right is the Mount Gambier Hotel, at the corner of Commercial Street and Penola Road. Scaffolding on left used for erection of the Town Hall clock tower. [General description] Town Hall, Norwood, designed by Alfred Wells and built in 1883. It is a two storey building with arched windows and doorways with the dominant feature being a domed clock tower. The clock is yet to be installed at this time, later to be gifted by Sir Edwin Thomas Smith in 1890.

[General description] The Town Hall on St Vincent Street was designed by architects Woods and Wright and features a clock tower and belfry, the foundation stone being laid by Sir James H. Fisher on 10 June, 1865 with the official opening on 29 August 1866. The clock was imported from London on the Indes in 1867. The building on the left has a shopfront which sells a variety of goods including wash tubs. Young street trees have wooden tree-guards to protect them. [On back of photograph] 'Port Adelaide Town Hall / On the left of it is a house built in 1848 by D. Bower / 1872-86'.

North Terrace West, looking East across Morphett St. Probably about 1870. Extracted from the Observer for 7 September 1929. A man stands on the nearside corner and North Terrace looks extremely muddy underfoot. Holy Trinity was the first Anglican church built in South Australia. The clock in the tower which has been there since 1838, was made by Vulliamy, clockmaker to King William IV. It was intended as the town clock and was put into this first Adelaide tower.

North Terrace, looking east from a point a little west of Morphett Street. Trinity Church on the right. The original art work by S.T. Gill is in the S.A. Art Gallery. The foundation stone for Holy Trinity Church was laid by Governor Hindmarsh on 26 January 1838 but when the building was finished it was considered to be unsafe and the church was rebuilt and enlarged. The clock in the tower was installed in 1838 and was intended for use as the town clock. Holy Trinity Church was the first Anglican church in South Australia and the tower was the first to be built in Adelaide. The art work depicts families strolling on north Terrace making their way to church. A man is walking his dog. Only a few houses have been built up to this date.

By the time of this photograph the galleries in the transepts were added. Garrison troops led by their own brass band marched down North Terrace from their barracks to attend services.
