Summary

The iron barque 'Selkirkshire', 1272 tons, at anchor. [iron barque, 1271 tons, ON80412, 228.4 x 35.8 x 20.4. Built 1878 (9) Birrell, Stenhouse and Co. One of the ships owned by The Shire Line / Thomas Law and Co., Glasgow. If it is the 'Selkirkshire', built by Birrell Stenhouse & Co. of Dumbarton, the image must be after 1878, which was when she was launched. She was owned by Thomas Law & Co. (Shire line), Glasgow. Her name was changed to 'Aventa' in 1905 when sold to a Norwegian owner. She was reported as lost in October 1905].

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
