The 'Australien's last major work was building the weirs on the Murray in the 1930s. She held the record - 10 days - for the fastest run up and back on the Darling river. She sank near the weir on Lake Mulwala, Yarrawonga in around 1962.

A researcher believes the photograph to be taken at Echuca ca.1914, as the 16 nhp steam plant has been fitted but the forward paddle box rooms are still original [round] not square. Also the craft is tied at the front to the Pride Of The Murray, partially dismantled as a floating store at the Moama slip.

PRG 1258/1/1355: Side view of the upper decks of P.S. Gem, which snagged and partly sunk, in Higgin's Cutting near Cal Lal, N.S.W., November 1948. [From information provided by Frank Tucker, the Gem sank at Cal Cal, not Higgin's Cutting]. According to another researcher, the Gem hit a snag next to what was then known as Scotty's Woodpile on Lindsay Island about 500 yards upstream from Wompinni House on the opposite bank.(Wompinni was part of Kulcurna Station then owned by the Higgins family and is still standing). The Captain realised the boat was in trouble but also knew that if he abandoned ship on that side of the river, they would not be able to get help because no-one lived there. He allowed The Gem to drift downstream and steered it to a sandbar next to what the Higgins family referred to as the First Creek. This was close to where the old Police Station and Customs House once stood. The Captain ran the boat aground on the sandbar, the passengers were able to get off safely onto the bank. One man had suffered a heart attack during the panic and had died. He was left on his bunk. Someone went for help to Wompinni and soon Mr J.T. Higgins and family were on the scene. His daughter Denys Higgins, aged about 19 at the time and mid-way through her nursing studies was rowed out to the Gem by her father to examine the body of the man to see if there was anything that could be done for him. In the meantime, all the crew and passengers were cared for by the Higgins family with cups of tea and food. Efforts were made to engage buses from Renmark to transport the passengers and crew back to Renmark but because the roads at the time were in a poor state, they were eventually all taken on trucks and by private transport.

PRG 1258/1/1562: Side view of 'P.S. Jumna' small two-man paddle steamer, approaching a road bridge. A researcher has provided the following information: This is P.S. Jumna on the Vasse River approaching the Causeway Bridge in Busselton Western Australia. The man in stern tending the engine is Rev. R. E. Davies the designer, builder and operator of the 'Jumna', modelled on the famous Paddle Tug Jumna, of Littlehampton Sussex England, which operated there towing sailing ships in and out of harbour in the late 1800s to early 1900s. Rev. Davies 'Jumna' ran from late 1939 to 1955 and then again in the early 1960s. 'Jumna' has been refurbished and is on display at the Busselton Historical Society's Old Butter factory Museum in Busselton.

A researcher has provided the following information: William Patey, the man standing on the top deck on the left, was the owner of the Mayho (originally named 'Julia' before he purchased her) and he used to cart wood to the Renmark Trust for many years before he sold it to the Renmark Trust, who then changed her name to Ero after Mr E.R. Olorenshaw. The trust continued to use her for many years and today she sits on the bottom of the river near Rufus.

It sank after a fire and lies just south of the railway bridge at Murray Bridge. There was also a Paddle Steamer 'Merle', which sank during a storm in 1917. It was built in Morgan in 1904 by Edward Dienier and named after one of his daughters. It pulled the barges Eva Millicent and Flo D until it sank during a storm in Lake Alexandrina in 1917, the crew and passengers taking refuge on the barge Flo until help arrived [See B 26224 for a better quality image].

PRG 1258/1/2867: Side view of 'P.S. Nil Desperandum' at the river bank, with possibly the hull of 'Paringa' in Mannum Dock. The following information was provided by a researcher: Captain William Richard Randell owned the 'Nil Desperandum' from 1870s to the 1880s, and also owned the Randell Dry Dock at Mannum. Photographer Robert Stacy was a South Australian travelling photographer in the 1860s to 1880s. He had a shop and studio at Strathalbyn in 1870 and also had intermittent studios at North Adelaide.

According to another researcher, this is definitely the first Pearl, built in 1866 and converted to a side wheeler in 1879. Chaffey's Pearl wasn't built until 1890/91.

According to a researcher, 'this is not the original Ruby. The first Ruby on the river was built in Melbourne in 1853 and Cadell brought her to the Murray to replace the PS Melbourne which was lost. This first Ruby was later rigged to sail to New Zealand and was eventually wrecked there. The Ruby in this photo was built in 1876 for Elliot Randell of Echuca/Moama and is what I call Ruby No. 2. Ruby No. 3 (Little Ruby) was built in 1894 and Ruby No. 4 (still in existence at Wentworth) was built in 1907 to replace Ruby No. 2.'

The following information was provided by a researcher: 'My house is built from the Murrundi and to this day it remains in very good condition. The entire roof structure of it remains intact above the ceiling. It was put on this block in the 1950s and bought from Percy Robert Myers. The land was signed over to him by Ivey Randell, daughter of Captain R.M. Randell'.

When this attempt failed, the PS 'Success' was also brought in to offer assistance and the combined power of the three paddle steamers succeeded in making it up through the navigable pass.'

PRG 1258/1/3892: Side view of 'P.S. Viola' at river bank, with water reflections, possibly in Renmark region. It was built up on the barge 'Advance' by William Conner (Senior) who was a fisherman in the Swan Reach area. When it was sold to Bourke, it was renamed 'Advance' and worked the Darling for a number years using the barge 'Retreat'. Around 1910 it was was purchased by Alec Conner, used for a while on the Darling and then brought back to the Murray where he transported cargo for Permewan Wright between Mildura and Wentworth. Alec changed the name back to 'Viola' and around 1930 it was sold to William Wilson, a fisherman on the Murrumbidgee River. Whilst moored at Coonoon Station, about 82 miles below Hay, the crew departed the scene with a station employee for drinks, the duration of their absence extending to a number of days. When they returned the river had fallen and the Viola was marooned on the bank, at a very embarrassing angle. It was never refloated and remains at the same location [information supplied by a researcher] [see also PRG 1258/1/3895].

According to a researcher, the Viola was still a steam launch in 1900 rather than a paddlesteamer. Another researcher indicates that there was a steam launch 'Viola' and a paddle steamer 'Viola' built in 1892, probably at Milang. Conner family history has it that William Conner built the P.S. 'Viola' in 1892 at Swan Reach on the barge 'Advance' and sold it up the Darling about 10 years later where its name was changed to 'Advance'. Conner used the P.S. 'Viola' as a fishing steamer [See also PRG 1258/1/3892].
