Summary

According to a researcher, this is the mansion called 'Romsdal' in Toorak, Victoria, and was the Melbourne residence of James Smith Reid. Romsdal home was the model for 'Rostrevor' owned by Mr Reid, Woodforde. Smith Reid purchased Rostrevor in 1887 and redeveloped the property to the state depicted here in 1901, using 'Romsdal' as the model. This picture comes from the J.S. Another researcher has suggested that it is possible that 'Romsdal' in Toorak was the residence of Everard Studley Miller (1886-1956) or that Miller may have some link to the image, as he was a keen photographer of monuments and buildings. According to 'The Argus' newspaper (2 December, page 12) Mr. J.S. Reid bought Romsdal along with ten acres in Toorak from Sir Edward Miller (father of Everard Studley Miller) in December 1899. According to the article 'Melbourne Lady's Letter' in 'Australian Town and Country Journal' (29 June 1901, page 44) the first owner of 'Romsdal' in Toorak was Thomas Baillie who called the mansion 'Ognez'. It was later sold to Mr Glen, and then to Mr J.S. Reid and was rented by Edward Miller, and then bought by Lachlan McKinnon in 1901.
