Summary

View of Port MacDonnell showing the Friendly Societies Hall and Methodist Church. In 1860 the area was officially proclaimed a port and was named after Sir Richard Graves MacDonnell who was Governor of South Australia. Wheat and wool was shipped to England from the port. From 1860 Reverend William Bennett visited Port MacDonnell to conduct services and later, after fundraising, a chapel was constructed. The first stone for the pictured chapel was laid in 1866. The building next to the Methodist Church is the Friendly Societies Hall which was completed in 1871 at a cost of 250 pounds. For 60 years it served as the centre of public entertainment
