Cottage, Blanchetown

John Maude Woolley, Custom Officer at Blanchetown, standing at the gate to his cottage. Mr JM WSoollley was a customs officer at Blanchetown. The cottage was demolished well before 1940. In 1844 Mr Woolley was declared insolvent after guaranteeing another man's debts to the tune of a thousand pounds. He returned to England but reappeared in Sydney in 1848 where he bought horses, cattle and sheep and took them overland to South Australia. He joined Customs as Sheep Inspector in 1861 and was appointed Sub-Collector at the port of Blanchetown when it opened.

Aerial view of the Sleep's Hill Viaduct in the Adelaide Hills. Viaducts for the railway lines in the Adelaide Hills crossed two steep gullies and were manufactured by an American company. The viaducts were dismantled in June 1920. They were located between Lynton and Eden Hills in the Adelaide Hills.

Three men with bicycles: Francis Birtles (touring); Arthur Warren & Robert Lennie who were attempting to break the Perth-Sydney cycling record. According to a researcher, the trio arrived at Eucla Telegraph Station on 22nd March 1907. Birtles joined the other two at Balladonia on 14th March as arranged but after Eucla continued on his own. A wonderful welcome was afforded them all at Eucla after some very trying conditions.

Glenelg

[General description] The Esplanade and Jetty, viewed from the water, are crowded with people on occasion of the visit of Australia's fleet, probably in February 1914 when the Australian warships Australia, Melbourne, and Sydney moored at Glenelg. The Town Hall displays a large banner welcoming the fleet and bunting is flying. A number of small craft are anchored near the jetty. [On back of photograph] 'Town Hall etc. Glenelg / 1913'.

Port Adelaide Corporation quarry building, Keikebush Road. According to a researcher, at the extreme centre left of the picture can be seen the two road locomotives purchased as part of the quarry plant from Gibson, Battle & Co., of Sydney, in 1912. The locos were built by J. & H. McLaren, of Leeds, and were rated at 10 nominal horse power, had 3 speeds and were mounted on springs. They were part of a batch of 5 similar model 65TC engines, reportedly a cancelled order from the British War Dept., being exported to Australia.

The woven lattice of wooden strips called wattle is daubed with a sticky material usually made of some combination of wet soil, clay, sand, animal dung and straw.
