Robjohns, W. A., c. 1920, Photograph, PRG 287/1

The series comprises 15 albums housing 1,973 photographs, most of which were taken by photographer W.A. Robjohns ca.1920-1966. Album covers were numbered and labelled by Robjohns. The sequence is incomplete, however, as only volumes 1-9, 12-14, 15, 20 and 23 have been donated. Robjohns' brief descriptions of content on the covers and spines are incomplete. For further descriptions of place names and subjects contained in each album, SEE details below. The albums contain small black and white prints, mostly undated, with captions by W.R. Robjohns. Also sepia and postcard prints, and a few hand-tinted prints. A small number of images were taken by other photographers, several of whom have been identified by Robjohns. Images depict Adelaide suburbs, city scenes and country towns, with an emphasis on rural landscapes, parks and reserves, rivers, reservoirs, streets, houses, churches, businesses and shop fronts, and public celebrations and processions. Also included are images of the Robjohns family on picnics and holiday outings, and their homes, cars and pets. A number of photos were duplicated or enlarged by Robjohns and appear in more than one album.

A collection of photos taken by, and of, Jean Debelle (later Jean Debelle Lamensdorf Matthews) who served with the Red Cross in Vietnam 1966-1967. Original prints for items 1-26 and 70 are held; the remainder are digital copies only. Note that some of the images (particularly items 49-52 which were taken from the web) are low to very low resolution files. See D 8815(Misc) for related material.

Flour Mill, Millbrook

[General description] This abandoned mill stands amongst gumtrees, falling into ruin. The central part of the building has started to collapse, probably because of damage done when machinery was removed. [On back of photograph] 'Flour Mill, Millbrook / erected by Whitford, Soward, Davies and Tippett in 1856 / Foundation stone laid by Francis Symonds, J.P. on April 29 1856 (See Observer May 3, 1856, supp. 1d / Mill closed in 1867 and machinery sold to the Port Pirie Milling Co. / For many years entertainments and Salvation Army meetings were held in the lower story / See cuttings book, Vol. 2, p. 135 / Presented by Mrs. S.A. Cornish'.

Harling House, Lower Mitcham

[General description] View of Harling House at Lower Mitcham, taken from the driveway with garden in foreground and hills in the distance. The house was built in 1861 by Charles and Henrietta Everett who lived there until 1873. Charles Everett was a grocer. This view shows three women at the end of the drive leading up to the house. [In the 1920s the building became part of the Salvation Army's Sunset Lodge Nursing Home on the corner of Brenchley Grove and Belair Road, Kingswood. [On back of photograph] 'Mr. W.M. Letchford's [William Martin Letchford (1824-1880)] residence / Lower Mitcham / 1876-77'.

Cottage, Mount Gambier

Home of Mr. Henstridge, at German Flat, Mount Gambier West : Behind fence, Harry Henstridge, Mr. Henstridge, Mrs Henstridge, Martha Henstridge, Sarah Henstridge, front of fence: ?, Fred Henstridge Jr., Maria Henstridge. House was built by the owner. Fred Henstridge Jr. died 21 November 1934, aged 75. He created the Cave Gardens in Mount Gambier, and was a member of the Salvation Army. His father came from England in the early 1800s, with his two brothers. Frederick Henstridge senior married Maria Smith and Harriet Ford. He was father to Mary Ann, Samual, Eliza, Sara Ann, Harriet Maria, Emily and Martha. Frederick senior's brother Henry was President of the Typographical Society in 1888 and in 1899 Compositor of the Register Newspaper. He died in 1908

Oddfellows Hall, Mt.Gambier

Oddfellows Hall at Mount Gambier. The Oddfellow's Hall was built in 1864 and enlarged in 1866. It was located in Watson Terrace. It was used for many concerts, meetings etc. in the early days and prior to 1914 was used for a number of years by the Salvation Army

Naracoorte. According to a researcher, this location is Smith Street, looking west towards Lucindale/Kingston. To the left would have been the park and Soundshell (built 1956), where the Salvation Army delivered an evening of music, approximately each Sunday night and every Christmas, during this period.

Presbyterian Church

[On back of photograph] This modest single storey building was the first Presbyterian Church at Port Adelaide / At the corner of Leadenhall and Marryat Streets / Foundation stone laid by Sir Thomas Elder on August 21, 1856 / Built by Bristoe & Goldsworthy for 1,600 pounds / Opened February 1857 / After the opening of the new church in St. Vincent Street (in 1882) the old building was successfully used as a Salvation Army barracks and a warehouse / Presented by Mrs. J. Hall Angus' (Another hand) 'Information from undated and undentified newspaper article in posession of Mrs. J. Hall Angus'.

Quorn Methodist Church was built in 1880. By the turn of the century Quorn had many churches - Methodist, Anglican, Lutheran, Catholic and Salvation Army

Chesser Street

Chesser Street, west side, 30th October 1964, right side of building is 13 yards south of French Street and frontage is 7 yards. The Salvation Army's People's Palace can be seen at the southern end of Chesser Street in Pirie Street. Some of the businesses on the western side of Chesser Street include Grant Industries (seatcovers and texile products), AG Thompson and Company, Tallerman at number 25, Shirley Perry (Interior Design). Most of these businesses are located with the Henry Austin Building

Pirie Street

Pirie Street, south side, January 12th 1959. Left side of the central three storey building (marked witrh a dot on the photograph) is 37.25 yards west of Gawler Place. Frontage of the building (from the dot to "x" on the photograph) is 40 yards. For a view of this building in 1910 see B 5381. The Salvation Army's People's Palace can be seen in the distance. Some of the businesses located in the buildings nearer to the camera include: Atkins Limited, The Town Hall branch of the E & S and A Bank Limited, William Brindal and Sons and Epworth Books in the Epworth Building at Number 33 Pirie Street. Epworth Building was built in 1927 as administrative offices for the Methodist Church and the Methodist Book Depot. This unique building was built in the federation gothic design with a seven storey "U" shaped structure and was named after the birthplace of John Weslei in Lincolnshire, England

Adelaide Motors, Pirie Street

The People's Palace and Adelaide Motors, Pirie Street, south side. Right side of the Freemason's Hotel is 64 yards east of Gawler Place. The People's Palace originally housed the German Club but from 1899 the Salvation Army occupied the premises until 1979. In 1938 a third storey was added, faithfully adhering to the building's design. The Freemason's Hotel existed from 1841 until 1978. It was rebuilt in 1880 and has also been known as Freemason's Tavern

Pirie Street, Adelaide

[General description] Alterations and enlargements to the Peoples Palace include an extra storey and two balconies, the cost of this project being around twelve thousand pounds. The architect was Mr. H. T. Griggs and the builders were Messrs. Webber and Williams. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 207 / Pirie Street, south side / April 7th 1939 / Alterations and additions were made to the Peoples Palace in 1938 / Compare with B 5158 / The near side of Peoples Palace is 84 yards east of Gawler Place and frontage is 33 yards'.

Gilbert Street, Adelaide, north side, showing part of the Bushmen's Home or Bushmen's Club. (In 1925 it became the Salvation Army Girls' Industrial Home.)
