Flour mill and cottage at Reynella
Photograph of a flour mill with a cottage at the side. Several workers are in the scene along with a horse and cart. A man is standing at the cottage gate. On the back is written "Reynella. Cains Flour Mill (burnt down). Stood opp the hotel...." Some of the writing is too faint to read but appears to end with "G.H. Pocock of Reynella." [The mill was known officially as the Southern Grist Mill and owned by a company of the same name.] A researcher who is related to the donor of the photograph states that the mill was located on the corner of Bridge Street and what is now Old South Road. It was not unusual for flour mills to burn down due to spontaneous combustion of the fine flour dust that circulated throughout the mill. Boiler explosions were also a problem. For example:- Trove - The Advertiser 5-1-1870 "A terrible boiler explosion occurred at Mr. Pool's Mill, Reynella, on December 9, when the stoker, Edward Condy, - was killed, and the boiler carried a distance of about 140 yards". (Stoker's name was probably Candy, a well known local family).
