Adelaide Railway Station

Adelaide Railway Station

Adelaide Railway Station. A researcher has provided the following information: 'The half-obscured poster at centre of the image provides evidence of the date. The SAR general traffic manager approved all announcements regarding train operations and Alan G. Pendleton (part of whose name can be discerned in the photo if you zoom in) was GTM between 1876 and 1895. T. Heward, the man at left with an umbrella (as written in pencil on the card) is Thomas Heward. Thomas was a signalman at Ovingham before joining the Parcels Office at the Adelaide Railway Station as chief parcels clerk in November 1883 (Source: State Records GRS 1038 SAR Record of Employment Sheets for T. Heward). (He was demoted to parcels clerk in 1886.) This suggests the image was taken sometime after late 1883. Searching SA newspapers (Trove) for the 1880s uncovered advertising in 1887 that supports the date. (EE being JUBILEE and TION! being EXHIBITION!). The Trove advertisements date from 31 May and the special ticketing ceased on 30 September. The poster would have been taken down or pasted over with another some time in October, so it may have been displayed a little longer. Consequently, the photo can be dated with a high degree of confidence to 1887. Identifying the nine men standing on the wooden crossings over the drain (which appears to have only been added around 1886 with city council changes to the water table) is more challenging. The two men at far left do not appear to be members of this group. There is a railway guard and a police constable with three stripes (indicating the rank of sergeant). The grouping may be haphazard or they have something in common.'
