Joseph Hawdon
[General description] Upper body portrait of Joseph Hawdon who arrived in Australia in 1834. He made his mark in South Australia as a grazier, overlander and mail carrier. Later (1840) moved to Victoria, then New Zealand where he was a member of the Legislatice Council until his death in 1871 [On back of photograph] 'Joseph Hawdon, reproduced from a portrait in Hawdon's typewritten journal in the Public Library of South Australia'.


John Warren of Springfield, Williamstown
John Warren, son of pioneer John Warren of Springfield at Williamstown, who arrived in Adelaide in January 1838 on the ship 'Royal Admiral'. Portrait presented to John Warren as part of a testimonial on 4 November 1912.

The Old Colonists Banquet Group [mosaic]
A photographic copy of a mosaic of photographic portraits created by Adelaide photographer Henry Jones to commemorate an Old Colonists' Banquet organised by merchant Emanuel Solomon at the Adelaide Town Hall on 28 December 1871. The original mosaic is held by the State Library of South Australia at B 47769. B 7677 contains 507 men's portraits, eight less than B 47769. Several identical copies of B 7677 exist, suggesting that it was produced for sale. It was donated to the Public Library of South Australia by photographer Ernest Gall in 1938.


Portrait photograph of Arthur Campbell Garnett
Portrait photograph of Arthur Campbell Garnett, who was born in South Australia and was Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Adelaide in 1924. He later became Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin in the United States. Garnett died on September 19, 1970 in Fort Worth, Texas. The photographer's stamp is on the back of the photo: Harold N. Hone, Portrait Photographer, Madison, Wisconsin. Browne family portraits
A collection of seven ambrotypes (six of which are hand-tinted) of Margaret Anne Frances Browne (nee Guilding) and her children. Margaret and John Browne had four children: Janet Frances (born 1858), Thomas Lansdowne (born 1860), Alice Mary (born 1863) and Mary Elizabeth (born 1864). Apart from item 1 (a portrait of Margaret Browne), and item 7 (assumed to be the three eldest children), it isn't possible to determine which child is featured in any of the portraits. [Note that at that time boys were dressed in the same clothing as girls until about their 6th birthday.]
