Walter Richard Birks

Portrait of W. R. Birks (1886-1960) Principal of Roseworthy Agricultural College he was educated at Prince Alfred College and the University of Adelaide. He performed research on the use of superphosphate in the germination of small seeds. He was Dux of Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1908. He was the nephew of Charles Birks of Birks Drapery Store in Rundle Street. He was wounded in World War 1.

[General description] Full length portrait of Captain John Bishop of Port Lincoln [duplicate copy at PRG 458/1/2/4], showing him standing and resting a hand on the back of a studio chair. He has mutton chop whiskers and is wearing a rumpled three piece suit. He arrived in Port Lincoln in 1839 in command of the 82 ton brig 'Dorset'. He took up land in Port Lincoln and Boston Island and with his family ran the township's first store.

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Neville Blyth, with a greying beard and moustache. With his family and more famous brother, Arthur, he emigrated to Adelaide in 1839. The brothers were successful ironmongers, land investors and politicians. Neville returned to England around 1878 where he died in 1890.

Judge Benjamin Boothby

[General description] Portrait of Judge Benjamin Boothby, seated and resting his hand on a small table. He is clean shaven with trimmed mutton-chop whiskers and wears light trousers, with long dark jacket worn open. In 1853, Boothby was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia. He was eventually 'amoved' from office on the grounds of 'misbehaviour' on the 29th July 1867.

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Josiah Boothby, Government Statistician. He wears his hair slicked back and mutton chop whiskers and moustache. As Government Statistician and Superintendent of the Census his work to introduce uniform census procedures throughout Australia was widely acknowledged and in 1878 he became executive commissioner for South Australia at the Paris Exhibition. He was awarded the C.M.G. and the Cross of the Legion of Honour for his work.

Portrait of Josiah Boothby Public Administrator, Government Statistican, Trustee of the Savings Bank of South Australia. He was appointed Executive Commissioner representing South Australia at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1878. He was created CMG for this position. He retired from the Public Service of South Australia in 1907. He was regarded as the most powerful civil servant in the colony. This photograph depicts Josiah Boothby proudly wearing the Medal of the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George, and the Cross of the Legion of Honour.

He was a South Australian lawyer, Supreme Court Judge and politician. He had three stints of being Premier of South Australia;1866-1867, 1875-1876 and 1877-1878. He was also one of the first to raise purebred Arabian horses in a recognised breeding program in Australia.

He joined Sturt's expedition to Central Australia as surgeon. He was brother to William James Browne who was also a qualified physician and a successful pastoralist.

{General description] This is a head and shoulders portrait of the Reverend H.T. Burgess, with the subject looking straight at the camera. He was a Wesleyan Methodist minister whose most important ecclesiastical contribution was his advocacy of union of the four branches of the Methodist movement. Also a journalist he was the author of several religious works, the best known being 'Methodism and the Twentieth Century' (Adelaide, 1901). [On front of photograph] '(Rev.) H.T.
