Under tow by the tug 'Svitzer Heron' the barge 'Bradley' carrying the clipper ship 'City of Adelaide' passes through the open Tom 'Diver' Derrick Bridge. 'City of Adelaide' had earlier been transferred onto the barge from the heavy lift ship 'Palanpur'.

Smith, Channon & Co. building, Port Adelaide

The offices of Smith, Channon & Co. at Lipson Street, Port Adelaide, Customs, Shipping & Commission Agents, Bonded & Free Stores, which stood until 1963 opposite the Dock Railway Station. These premises were originally owned by Philip Santa Co., Merchants and shipping agents (James Smith, Manager), and acquired by Smith Channon & Co. about 1887. It was sold to J. Gadsden, bag merchant, and the company moved to one of Blacker's buildings in St. Vincent Street, formerly occupied by J. Rawlings & Son, and then by M. Donaghy & Son. In front of the building are Herbert Marshall, J.W. Channon, Frank Pickhaver, and John Turnbull. Vernon Smith was abroad at the time, and troops were passing through Port Adelaide to the Boer War. J.G. Brooks is on the firm's trolly, holding the horse 'Bully'. To see a selection of photographs in this collection, search on Archival number PRG 1642/26.

Port Adelaide wharf reconstruction

View looking east toward Number 1 Dock, Port Adelaide. Reconstruction work is underway. The dump barge in the left foreground was used to transport dredged spoil away from the berth being deepened. Robinson Bridge, demolished in 1935, spans the entrance to the dock, and the 60 Ton floating crane, commissioned in 1925, is moored alongside the berth on the far side of the dock.

The steamboat on the left is the Juno which first arrived in 1847 from Sydney. She was the first vessel from overseas to steam up the Port River. [General description] This view of the Jervois bridge over the Port River has a backdrop of industrial buildings and warehouses. There are a few pedestrians and several horse-drawn vehicles including a pair of draught horses with a wagon load of sacks, driver perched on top of the load. This iron swing bridge was opened on 6th February 1878 by Governor Sir William Jervois. See B 4419 for an earlier view. [On back of photograph] 'Jervois Bridge, Port Adelaide / 1917-27'.

This solid stone two storey building served as the Post Office at Port Adelaide during the latter half of the nineteenth century and into the the nineteen twenties. It features decorative ironwork in a curved archway over its front entrance. A large postbox stands on the footpath in front of the building. [On back of photograph] 'Post Office, Port Adelaide / Marine Parade / 1928 / In 1928 the Post Office was transferred to a new building in Commercial Road. See B 4605 / Reproduced in the "Advertiser" for Jan. 25, 1928'. According to a researcher the street address was North Parade, Port Adelaide.

[General description] This is a photographic copy of a lithograph of Port Adelaide in 1844, based on a sketch by Alexander Murray. Lithographed by A. Vaughan of the Surveyor's General Office, Adelaide. It depicts shipping and buildings of early Port Adelaide with a rowboat moored in the foreground amongst a few mangroves. Nile Street, Port Adelaide

Premises in Nile Street Port Adelaide, south side, nearly opposite the Sailor's Rest in 1928. Formerly used for public stores at Old Port . These were demolished early in 1929. Under the corregated iron is one of the two half-round structures erected at the Old Port in the early days for housing public stores. It had a smooth (not corregated) iron roof, supported by a framework or iron. these old stores can be seen in Light's view of the Old Port (B 508) By 1844 they had been moved to the New Port (B 2220) The photograph depicts a man and a boy standing at the raised doorway to the business premises of Fred. A Elix Forage Merchant. A man in a car is parked in the street in front of the building.

Alfred E. Sawtell's premises on the northern side of Divett Street, Port Adelaide. To the left is the Bank of South Australia, on the east corner of Commercial Road. Sawtell's Nautical Optician and Watchmaker was established in Port Adelaide in 1853 by Edwin Sawtell and was run solely by his son Alfred from the 1860's.
