Customs House

Customs House, Port Adelaide. This view shows the Customs House on Commercial Road, Port Adelaide, the third Customs building on this site. It was built in 1877-79 in the Victorian Italianate style, next to the earlier Institute building (1874-76). Originally the two buildings were separated by a laneway but they were later joined together. The Customs House was designed by Colonial Architect George Thomas Light and originally housed the Marine Board, Surveyors and Harbor Master.

Port Adelaide Artillery volunteers

Port Adelaide Artillery volunteers

Believed to be members of the Port Adelaide Artillery (volunteers) during the 1860s. The location is between St Vincent Street and Nile Street and behind the 1860 Police Station, Court House and Custom House building in Commercial Road, now occupied by the Port Adelaide Visitor Information Centre. The dome visible at left was originally on the central portion of that building but was removed early in the 20th century.

Sepia and wash sketch depicting the Port Adelaide Town Hall, and adjoining buildings. A note on the reverse records the memories of donor Miss A. Duncan: 'Shows the Town Hall, St Vincent Street, Port Adelaide, and the house in which Dr H. Duncan lived from the time it was built - about 1856 - till his death. It was the official residence of the Immigration Agent and Health Officer. The official entrance is shown in the east wall. The house was built of limestone and brick. Alongside are the boat-sheds of the Water Police. When first built the house stood above the street level, but a year or two before we left, the street was raised, and we went down three steps to the front door.'

Port Adelaide Lighthouse

Port Adelaide Lighthouse

Port Adelaide Lighthouse located at the mouth of the Port River, Outer Harbor. The lighthouse was erected and began service in 1869, and underwent expansion and renovations in 1874. After damage from a storm in 1896 and deterioration the lighthouse was dismantled in 1899 and its components used in other lighthouses. The lantern was transferred to the Wonga Shoal lighthouse at Semaphore, and the steel tower was moved to South Neptune Island and was in use until 1985. The lighthouse was deactivated and moved back to Port Adelaide, where it was reassembled and restored in 1986, and is currently located at Black Diamond Square at the end of Commercial Road in Port Adelaide.

A Port Adelaide Australian Rules Football player standing with his arms folded. A researcher has suggested that this is Harold Oliver (full name, William Harold Oliver), born on 12 August 1891 to James Oliver and Sarah (nee Mill) at Waukaringa, SA. Harold Oliver grew up in the South Australian Riverland, and after moving to Adelaide, played in the Western Suburban Association before making his league debut with the Port Adelaide Magpies in 1910. Oliver was renowned for his high marking, as well as his speed, exceptional ball handling skills and versatility. During World War I, Oliver returned to Berri to maintain his farm, before returning to league football in 1919, serving as club captain during the 1921 season and leading the club to victory in the SAFL premiership. Oliver played a total of 117 games with Port Adelaide from 1910 to 1922, kicking 89 goals. He retired in 1922 to his farm in Berri. Oliver married Myrtle Blanche Downer in 1913, and had three children: Beryl Ivy Oliver (b.1914), James Harold Oliver (b.1917), and Joyce Mary Oliver (b.1923). Under tow by the tug 'Svitzer Heron' the barge 'Bradley' carrying the clipper ship 'City of Adelaide' passes through the open Tom 'Diver' Derrick Bridge. 'City of Adelaide' had earlier been transferred onto the barge from the heavy lift ship 'Palanpur'.

Smith, Channon & Co. building, Port Adelaide

The offices of Smith, Channon & Co. at Lipson Street, Port Adelaide, Customs, Shipping & Commission Agents, Bonded & Free Stores, which stood until 1963 opposite the Dock Railway Station. These premises were originally owned by Philip Santa Co., Merchants and shipping agents (James Smith, Manager), and acquired by Smith Channon & Co. about 1887. It was sold to J. Gadsden, bag merchant, and the company moved to one of Blacker's buildings in St. Vincent Street, formerly occupied by J. Rawlings & Son, and then by M. Donaghy & Son. In front of the building are Herbert Marshall, J.W. Channon, Frank Pickhaver, and John Turnbull. Vernon Smith was abroad at the time, and troops were passing through Port Adelaide to the Boer War. View looking east toward Number 1 Dock, Port Adelaide. Reconstruction work is underway. The dump barge in the left foreground was used to transport dredged spoil away from the berth being deepened. Robinson Bridge, demolished in 1935, spans the entrance to the dock, and the 60 Ton floating crane, commissioned in 1925, is moored alongside the berth on the far side of the dock.
