'Lady Augusta' and 'Mary Ann' at Swan Hill

The steamers 'Lady Augusta' (shown with two funnels) and 'Mary Ann' at Swan Hill on the River Murray, September 1853. Originally published as the frontispiece to James Allen, jun., Journal of an experimental trip by the 'Lady Augusta' on the River Murray, Adelaide : C.G.E. Platts, 1853. The Register publishes reports of the voyage by their correspondent; "Friday 16 September. The afternoon was very stormy, and at dusk we moored for the night by the river side, the Mary Anne doing the same a little astern us." Register 10 October 1853, page 3. According to a letter from the Australasian July 29, 1936 the sketch here reproduced was done by J Allen, from an etching by Schram and formed the frontispiece of a pamphlet published by Platts, Adelaide, 1853, called Journal of an Experimental Trip by the Lady Augusta.

RENMARK: Paringa bridge, built over the Murray River at Renmark, South Australia. The Paringa railway bridge over the River Murray. The bridge, considered to be one of Australia's great engineering feats, was designed so that one of the six steel spans could be raised to allow the river boats to pass through. It carried a single-track railway and also catered for road traffic with cantlevered roadways on both sides of the central spans. For a more comprehensive view of the bridge, see B 60629/99.
