Other sections are shown on the central left side of the Hundred, around Murdoch's Hill, and in the adjoining Hd. of Onkaparinga, south east of the site of Balhannah. Pencil notation on this section of map reads "Additional sections in Onkaparinga should have been dotted - they are considerably fudged to bring them in." Plan of the Mount Barker Special (Mineral) Survey on section 2001, on the boundary of the Hundreds of Kanmantoo and Monarto, shown as subdivided in 1845 into 20 1,000 acre rectangular strips of land. Some of this area yielded copper from 1846 onwards. The areas selected by the South Australian Company have been coloured in green and red; those selected by the Paringa Mining Company have been left uncoloured. (Information under the green coloured areas is mostly illegible. Names of copper mines etc. on the uncoloured areas can be read.) The layout of the townships of Callington (1856), St. Ives (1856), Kanmantoo (1849) and Tavistock (1856) are shown but not named. Ink and watercolour on paper, ink notation, on canvas backing. Edgar William Giles

Edgar William Giles July 1, 1920. Born at Staughton, near Kanmantoo on October 5, 1851. Son of William Giles, who was the eldest son of William Giles, the Manager of the South Australian Company. He entered the Civil Service on March 16, 1874. Commissioner of Audit, February 1, 1912. Retired Sept. 30, 1923. He is wearing an embroidered levee dress uniform with bicorn hat and ceremonial sword to which he was entitled as a high level civil servant, following the British court tradition.

Stone structures, West Parklands

Stone sculptural structures along Sir Donald Bradman Drive in the West Parklands. Called 'Lie of the Land', they are part of the Western Gateway Public Art Project. Designed by Aleks Danko and Jude Walton using Kanmantoo slate and erected in 2004, they are based on a drawing by Eugene von Guerard in the Art Gallery of South Australia which showed indigenous Australians camped in the parklands when Adelaide was settled.
