Collection of several hundred 3" x 4" glass plates negatives taken around Adelaide by Theo Bachmann ca.1915-1950. Originally housed in labelled sleeves with an index, they feature the Bachmann and Plunket families, as well as more general scenes. The original envelope number (where it exists) is shown in square brackets after the description of each image, and can be cross-referenced to the index (see B 71826/656). Images 201-300 feature the family home, and views around Adelaide.

Photographs collected and taken for a conservation study of older residential buildings and hotels in Adelaide city (not North Adelaide) in 1976-1977, initiated by the Adelaide Residents' Society Inc., which were later used in their 1978 publication 'Preserving Historic Adelaide' edited by Colin Bond and Hamish Ramsay (Rigby Limited). The names of the photographers are not specified, but the following people were involved: Bob Ramsay, Michael Brock, Peter Kelly and Peter O'Grady. (Negatives of their photographs comprise series 4-6 of this group, and may include images from this series.) Some of the early views of buildings have been copied from State Library images (denoted in captions by 'SLSA'). See 'Contents' in 'More info' for details. (The City Acre number or exact location is not specified). Three images not listed in the 'Contents' but included in the book are: (98) Part of Queen Elizabeth I's proclamation of 1560 'agaynst breakyng or defacing of Monuments'; (99) Elevation drawing of St Paul's Cathedral, London by Christopher Wren; (100) Kirribilli House, Sydney.

George Weste's premises

George Weste's premises

View of George Weste's premises, apparently located in the mid-north of South Australia. The image shows the premises of 'Geo. Weste - tinsmith and galv. iron worker' and promoting 'Galv'd iron, spouting, [and] deep well pumps'. A number of men are pictured outside along with a large number of goods in front of the building. A later annotation on the back reads 'Mr Mattison (traveller that are - still same with new side building) / Uncle Bill - friends of family / H.V. Weste now at [inscription ends here]'. The premises is likely located in Laura or Gladstone, South Australia. A researcher has noted that according to advertisements in 'The Areas' Express' 1877 there was a George Weste, tinsmith and galvanised iron worker, located in Cross Street, Booyoolee, formerly located at Port Street, Gladstone.

According to brief paperwork attached to the photos, many were taken for the Standard Messenger newspaper. Where more than one date has been added to a photo, one of the dates may refer to when it was published in the newspaper.

Railway Station, Brinkworth in the mid north of South Australia north of Clare. The town was named after an early landowner George Brinkworth and was settled in 1860 with the town being laid in 1892. The railway went through Brinkworth to Gladstone with junction lines to Snowtown, Kadina and Wallaroo.

Redruth Gaol, Burra

Redruth Gaol, Burra was erected in 1856 and was the first gaol in South Australia outside of Adelaide. It cost 3200 pounds. It was reopened in 1897 as a girls reformatory after the prisoners were transferred to Gladstone Gaol. Thomas Perry was gaol keeper for 25 years and the gaol was referred to as Perry's Hotel.

Railtrucks lined up at the Railway Station at Caltowie. Caltowie is in the Mid North of South Australia between Gladstone and Jamestown. It is on the Crystal Brook and Broken Hill railway line. The station buildings are constructed of timber.

Main Street, Hamley Bridge

Main street (Light Street), Hamley Bridge is located 78 kilometres north of Adelaide located on the junction of the Gilbert and Light Rivers. Hamley Bridge was a break of gauge station on the Gladstone Railway Line but this ceased in 1927 when narrow gauge lines were converted to broad gauge. Two stores seen in the photograph include Harrisons and Red Store General Merchants. The Institute Building can be seen at the end of the main street.

[General description] Horse drawn vehicles wait in front of the Railway Station at Laura. The railway line extended from Gladstone to Laura in 1884, then on to Booleroo Centre in 1910, and finally to Wilmington in 1915. The line closed in 1969.

Scotch College, Torrens Park

Scotch College, Torrens Park was founded in 1919 as an independent Presbyterian school for boys. Headmaster Norman Murray Gladstone Gratton initiated a program of expansion and development thus in 1946 the college built a junior school - Gratton House. This was a memorial to 57 Old Collegians who were killed in World War II.
