Eyre Peninsula fishing, farming and other activities : collection of film negatives

Records comprise small rolls of Panchromatic film negatives, showing scenes of fishing, boating, farming, sports and other local industries and activities in the Port Lincoln, Tumby Bay, Coffin Bay areas of Eyre Peninsula. Included are three photographs of Ray Gordon with friends and the Landrover in which he and Wilf Roediger made their overland trip (1960) to the Northern Territory. [Engraved woodblock of flying fish, bat and penguins]

An engraved wood block featuring an illustration by Paul Landacre, the print from which was used in Douglas Dunstan's 1963 edition of 'On the Origin of Species' on page 139. The artwork comprises a composition of a winged fish, a bat with wings outstretched, and three penguins. The block has been cut in the left hand (right on print) lower corner and another piece of wood block with an image of a smaller penguin has been tacked to the main block to fill the space. This additional part has been produced in red ink, instead of black, in the print.

Murray River fish boat

A small paddle steamer, identified as a 'Murray River fish boat' (probably P.S. 'Victoria') on a wide stretch of river. According to a researcher, P.S. Victoria was used as a fishing steamer in the Karadoc area. There is a fish punt on the starboard forward quarter, where the fish that were caught were kept alive until it was time to send them off to market. P.S. Victoria lays as a hulk in the Murray River, just up from the Cahffey bridge, and can be seen when the weir at Mildura is removed during a low river.

According to a researcher, the fishing punt in this photo is submerged therefore in use, keeping the already caught fish alive prior to sending them off to market. PS Ranger was one of the Conner family's fishing fleet, based out of Boundary Bend (VIC), but sometimes travelling farther afield for their job of catching fish.

Fish caught at Renmark for the Adelaide market : it was a week's catch for three men which came to 1800 lbs of fish at one penny halfpenny per pound. A researcher has added that 'these fish are Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii). This is a very important photo because it documents the severe overfishing that caused the first declines of Murray cod'.

Bow view of fishing boat 'P.S. Moira', tied up to Goolwa Wharf, outside barge 'Emily', with a catch of fish. According to a researcher, The P.S. Moira, was owned by Joseph Waldo Rice " Govenir". He owned the Murray River Fishing Company from 1852 at Barmah. He later sold the boat down stream.
