River Steamer "Viola"

River Steamer "Viola". According to a researcher, the Paddle steamer Viola did not exist as such until about 1910-11. Previous to this she was a steam launch and wasn't actually built until 1898. This photo was taken during her life as a fishing steamer, as seen by the fishing poles etc. on deck, so it was probably during her ownership by the Conner family of Boundary Bend. Her next owner c.1933, was William Wilson, also a professional fisherman.

Horseshoe Hotel, Noarlunga

Horseshoe Hotel, Noarlunga

Horseshoe Hotel, Noarlunga was built in the 1840's on a horseshoe shaped portion of the Onkaparinga River. No-orlunga is from the Aboriginal word for fishing place and the old inn was known for organising fishing parties on the tidal river. It also had the reputation as a watering hole for smugglers bringing their alcohol and tobacco from wrecks in the Gulf. The Horseshoe Inn was also a staging post for coaches and bullock teams from Adelaide. According to a researcher, the man to the left of the photo holding the horse reins is John Charles Dungey, proprietor from 1887-1889 and again from 1893-1914 and the girls are likely to be his daughters.

The "Yandra Salvage"

The "Yandra Salvage"

The "Yandra Salvage", 21 February 1959. According to a researcher, Bill Waller had the salvage rights. The researcher has been board a number of times via the rope and flying fox rigged back to the shore and helped carry salvaged items across the Island. One day when it was particularly calm and Waller filled the lifeboat, now missing from those davits with beer kegs and other items of value, and lowered it down the side of the 'Yandra'. Waller managed to sail her clear of the wreck and the island where others motored his fishing cutter, the 'Yvonne', out to join him. They then towed the lifeboat all the way back to Port Turton to unload. Shortly after in a heavy sea, the 'Yandra' slipped off the rock shelf she was sitting on and slid beneath the waves where she sits to this day protected by the Great Whites that frequent the area. Relative Matt Waller now visits the Neptunes almost daily taking tourists to see those very sharks which he attracts by playing heavy metal music.

P.S. Viola at river bank possibly in Renmark region

P.S. Viola at river bank possibly in Renmark region

Side view of 'P.S. Viola' at river bank, with water reflections, possibly in Renmark region. It was built up on the barge 'Advance' by William Conner (Senior) who was a fisherman in the Swan Reach area. When it was sold to Bourke, it was renamed 'Advance' and worked the Darling for a number years using the barge 'Retreat'. Around 1910 it was was purchased by Alec Conner, used for a while on the Darling and then brought back to the Murray where he transported cargo for Permewan Wright between Mildura and Wentworth. Alec changed the name back to 'Viola' and around 1930 it was sold to William Wilson, a fisherman on the Murrumbidgee River. Whilst moored at Coonoon Station, about 82 miles below Hay, the crew departed the scene with a station employee for drinks, the duration of their absence extending to a number of days. When they returned the river had fallen and the Viola was marooned on the bank, at a very embarrassing angle. It was never refloated and remains at the same location [information supplied by a researcher] [see also PRG 1258/1/3895].
