Collection of several hundred 3" x 4" glass plates negatives taken around Adelaide by Theo Bachmann ca.1915-1950. Originally housed in labelled sleeves with an index, they feature the Bachmann and Plunket families, as well as more general scenes. The original envelope number is shown in square brackets after the description of each image, and can be cross-referenced to the index (see B 71826/656. Images 101-200 feature family picnics, The Botanic Gardens, views around Belair and Waterfall Gully, and scenes around the suburbs.

Waikerie Hotel Motel
Entrance to Oscars Cafe Bar at the front of the Waikerie Hotel Motel, South Australia This building was destroyed by fire in the early hours of 4 September 2011.

Screw steamer Merle at Blanchetown
Bow and side view of screw steamer 'Merle' cruising with passengers at Blanchetown, after conversion to a motor vessel for tourist trips between Murray Bridge to Blanchetown and downstream to the Lakes. It sank after a fire and lies just south of the railway bridge at Murray Bridge. There was also a Paddle Steamer 'Merle', which sank during a storm in 1917. It was built in Morgan in 1904 by Edward Dienier and named after one of his daughters. It pulled the barges Eva Millicent and Flo D until it sank during a storm in Lake Alexandrina in 1917, the crew and passengers taking refuge on the barge Flo until help arrived [See B 26224 for a better quality image].

Probably the small boat used by the photographer George Burnell. It has a shade canopy at the rear, and is tied to the riverbank, where there is a cooking pot hanging from a tripod over the fire place. Possibly during his second trip up the river from Goolwa, South Australia.

Ash Wednesday fires. Hundred of Red Cross volunteers throughout the state received evacuees and victims at Welfare Assembly Centres and processed their registrations which were 'matched' with the thousands of enquiries which came from all over the globe.
