Sections 23, 2185, 2186 and 2099, hand coloured in green, indicate land purchased by the South Australian Company on 14 August 1852. A line marked in red ink shows the route of the proposed railway from Port Elliot to Goolwa. Ink with watercolour wash on paper, ink notation . Initials 'E.R.S.' in bottom left hand corner. Consists of three maps, one showing the whole of the special survey giving section numbers, names of owners and showing the reserve for natives. The second shows Currency Creek township with street names and lot numbers with some owners names, and includes green and red shading, green meaning that the area is reserved for public purposes, red for those reserved for the post office and police station. The third and smallest map shows Goolwa and gives street names, numbered lots and some owner's names. Annotations in ink. Part-coloured (watercolour).

Lieut.Col. T. W. Higgins

Lieut.Col. T. W. Higgins

Lieut Col. Thomas Walker Higgins (1840-1899) (Goolwa Volunteer Cavalry). He is wearing a Gambaldi jacket. In 1861 he became a volunteer in the Goolwa and Port Elliot Rifle Brigade. Before this he was a clerk at the Adelaide Post Office. He bought land at Currency Creek and named the property Higginsbrook after the family home in Ireland. He had cattle, sheep and cereal crops. He was respected by the local Aboriginals. He became Lieut. Colonel in 1867 and was given the rank of Colonel in Charge of the Voluntary Cavalry. He is buried in the Currency Creek Cemetery.

Young Bingham Hutchinson

Young Bingham Hutchinson

Young Bingham Hutchinson was a Royal Navy officer, early explorer and a settler of South Australia. He kept a diary of his voyage on board the "Buffalo". He and William Burt were the first Europeans to climb Mount Lofty, later he explored the Fleurieu Peninsula and Currency Creek. He returned to England in 1838, married and later brought his family of three daughters and two sons to live at Hindmarsh Valley where he died in 1870

George Sara

George Sara

George Sara of Willunga was an enterprising businessman. Within a decade of his arrival from Cornwall he had established a building firm. He was responsible for many of the buildings in Willunga. In the 1860's the firm undertook government contracts and built the railway viaduct over Currency Creek and the Police Station at Clarendon among other projects. George was a Justice of the Peace and Chairman of the Willunga District Council. He died aged 100

Edward Bate Scott

Edward Bate Scott

Edward Bate Scott, explorer, squatter and government official. He joined a cattle drive from Melbourne to Adelaide where he met EJ Eyre. He supported Eyre on the expedition to the interior. Later he explored the Murray River. He ran the Government Station at Moorundee and was a stockowner near Morgan. Later he moved to Goolwa on Encounter Bay, then moved to Adelaide where he became Superintendent of Yatala Prison in 1869. He died at Hamilton Lodge, his residence at Currency Creek and is buried in the local cemetery [duplicate copy at PRG 458/1/2/30].

Alfred Weaver

Alfred Weaver, pastoralist, 1801-1891. Notes on the back of the photograph state "Alfred Weaver, pastoralist, born 1801 died 1891 Edwardstown. Mr and Mrs Alfred [Weaver] arrived in SA in the "Katherine Stewart Forbes" in 1839. By 1840 he had established himself on a property on South Road which was planted with wheat, barley and oats, and also ran sheep. Later he owned property at Currency Creek and on the Yorke Peninsula but returned to his South Road property where he also grew vines.

A few have been donated since his death, to be added to his collection. Included are transparencies of aerial views of 1974 flood along River Murray, photographer unknown (Godson ref: 'Index 59'). Images 366-400 are the first in sequence, followed by images 322-352.
