Ship Duncow, near Cape du Couedic, Kangaroo Island, the vessel was abandoned on 25 May 1897 and was found several days later, safely riding at anchor. The cape is located on the western tip of Kangaroo Island and is named after the French naval officer Charles Louis du Couedic, the Seigneur de Kergoualer (1740-1780). The "Duncow" was laden with mining timber from NW America bound for Port Pirie. The tug "Yatala" rescued the crew but later replaced them when it was safe.

Cape du Couedic Jetty - men working on the hoist at the end of the jetty. A landing was constructed one mile north of the lighthouse site to enable the landing of stores and building materials. A zigzag path was built was hewn into the cliff face . The lighthouse, built in 1902, was necessary as shipwrecks had claimed 79 lives off Cape du Couedic, Kangaroo Island.

Cape du Couedic Lighthouse

Cape du Couedic Lighthouse on Kangaroo Island's south west was constructed between 1906-1919 from 2,000 pieces of local stone. Three four roomed cottages were also built of local stone and slate for the roofs. On the day the official party was due to land and officially open the lighthouse the weather was so bad that the signal was sent from the "Governor Musgrave" to the keeper onshore to commence operation.
