Letter addressed to philanthropist Louisa Da Costa concerning her investments in Adelaide

Letter addressed to philanthropist Louisa Da Costa concerning her investments in Adelaide

A letter from Louisa Da Costa's Adelaide solicitor, Alfred Spence of 12 Currie Street, dated 8 December 1881, addressed to Miss Da Costa in London 'Per RMS Rohilla via Brindisi'. The letter is handwritten in ink over two pages, with the third page left blank, and the address panel on the outer side franked with two South Australia postage stamps and with two 'Registered' hand stamps and circular arrival stamp 'London JA 18 1882'. Endorsed in Louisa Da Costa's hand 'date 8 December 1881, received 18 January 82' and 'answered 6 February 1882'. In the letter, Adelaide solicitor Alfred Spence updates Louisa on various property, banking and financial matters. The letter shows how closely involved Louisa continued to be with the affairs of her many investments in South Australia, which had been established through purchasing property with her brother during their time in Adelaide, decades earlier. Among other matters, the letter discusses a release of property to Sir John Morphett; another to James Munro; and the propspect of reveiving compensation from the Central Road Board for two acres taken from one of Louisa's land sections at Glenelg.
