Onkaparinga Bridge

Hack's Bridge over the Onkaparinga River at Mylor. This is possibly the first laminated arch bridge on the site. (From information provided) The bridge is 235 feet long and 20 feet wide. The breadth is divided into two tracks - one for drays and one for pedestrians. The footpath is raised 6 inches above the roadway. The bridge stands on one stone pier 9 feet thick. The first pile was driven in on August 20th, 1849 and was open to the public on June 6th, 1850.

The springs were declared a government water reserve in 1860. A railway was built from Port Augusta to Hergott Springs in 1881. King William Street, Adelaide. The street is busy with horse drawn traffic. In the foreground a man is talking to the driver of a hire cart, and in the centre of the road is the taxi rank of the time - a line of horse cabs. Two horse trams are passing each other. On the extreme right is the Imperial Fire Assurance building, designed by Wright and Woods. In the centre distance the guardhouse for Government House can be seen. A sign on the lower left corner reminds horse drivers and riders to 'walk around corners and over crossings'.

[General description] This substantial two storey stone house features a mansard roof with a widow's walk. This is the new residence of Adelaide's well-known Doctor James Phillips, replacing an earlier thatched cottage on the site (See B 7469). North Terrace east 1873-1886. The left side of centre building (Dr. Way's) is 18 yards west of Stephens Place. Frontage (fence to fence) : 17 yards. The two storey sandstone house has an upper verandah and a small front garden. A lady, gentleman, two young girls and a small baby can be seen on the upstairs verandah.

Western corner of North Terrace and Pulteney Street, Chalmers Church. The church was opened in 1851 and the tower was added in 1858. In 1929 the Flinders Street Presbyterian Church and Chalmers Church amalgamated under the new name of Scots Church. Chalmers Church was named after the Reverend Dr Thomas Chalmers, who supported the Free Church of Scotland. It was built by a group of early immigrants to South Australia.

[General description] This newly completed Botanic House complex is a fine example of the Victorian Terrace. The three storey portion of the building is a family temperance hotel and the terrace on the right was elegant housing 'with a fine view of the country'. It was designed by Michael McMullin and built by J.Barry for Richard Vaughan in 1876-77. Vaughan obtained a liquor licence in 1883. See B 7089 for a later view of the hotel with tiered verandahs. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 31 / North Terrace East / 1878-79 / The left side of Botanic House abuts East Terrace / The right side of the two storey buildings is 69 yards west of East Terrace'.

Botanic Hotel. West corner of East and North Terraces, North Terrace frontage is 15 yards and East Terrace frontage is 13 yards. Botanic Hotel was established in 1883 and traded as unlicensed accommodation when first opened. The sign over the door says "Botanic House Private Family Hotel". The first licensee was R Vaughan in 1883 and the fine row of terrace houses adjacent was designed by the same architect, Michael McMullen.

The King of Hanover Hotel, Rundle Street. The left side of the hotel is 57 yards west of Charles Street and the frontage is 13 yards. This hotel has just been rebuilt. See B 2104 for a view of the old building, taken circa 1860, and for further information. The King of Hanover Hotel existed since 1846 with many name changes including: Boar's Head, Cornish Miners' Arms, Cornish Arms, Commonwealth. It was known as the King of Hanover Hotel from 1853-1915.

Rundle Street, left side of the shop is 38 yards east of Francis Street and frontage is 7 yards. The photograph shows HL Vosz gas fitters, plumber, selling paints, wall paper and decorations. Several men are standing in the doorway and the shop is next door to a bread and biscuit bakery. A note on the back of the photograph suggests that the large "VR" was erected on the wall above the shop for the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh in 1867.

A well-to-do lady and gentleman are picking their way across the street, whilst two policemen pose for the camera. Transport is by horse, both ridden and driven. [See directories 1896-1901 for south side; J.A. Cook and Healy. Captain Sweet's name appears on the building in the centre right but apparently his name was left on the wall for many years after his departure from this part of the city.]
