Government dockyard, at Port Adelaide: in the centre can be seen the "Kadina", a 400 tons steam barge/hopper used in connection with dredging operations and was imported by the South Australian Government in 1879.

Prince Alfred Sailor's Home

Prince Alfred Sailor's Home, Port Adelaide is an imposing three storey building designed by architect Robert G Thomas. HRH Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh laid the foundation stone in 1869. It was built on intertidal ground and suffered severe subsidence with the foundation sinking 19 inches into the sediment. When the building was demolished several artifacts were discovered in the foundation stones which included bottles, coins copies of the newspapers of the time.

Post and Telegraph Offices, Port Adelaide. The scaffolding on the Customs House is for the final work performed on the building. The symmetrical Italianate Telegraph Office was completed in 1868 and housed the Port Adelaide telephone exchange which opened in 1883. This photograph shows the bluestone building with chimneys and cement rendered dressings.

Port Adelaide Institute

Port Adelaide Institute forms the southern section of the Customs House complex. The Port Adelaide Institute was formed in 1859 and was a centre for education and other cultural and social activities in Port Adelaide for over 100 years. The building was constructed from bluestone and contained a library, reading room, museum, lecture hall, classrooms and a balustraded parapet with a mansard roof.

Commercial Road, Port Adelaide, looking south from the river. The building on the right is the Customs House which was constructed in 1878-79 to the design of the Colonial Architect George Thomas Light. The South Australian Government collected taxes on goods imported from other Australian states and from overseas. The building has cut stone dressings and cornices and is constructed from Dry Creek stone with dressings of Sydney white freestone. It boosts a prominent tower with a mansard roof, lookout and a flagpole. The tower faces the Port River. On the other side of Commercial Street stands the Commercial Hotel which was built in 1841 and rebuilt after a fire in 1857. JC Addison was the proprietor at the time of this photograph.

Harrold Brothers premises, Todd Street, near the corner of St.Vincent's Street, Port Adelaide. The Harrold Brothers founded the Adelaide Line, later known as the Harrold Line, which carried passengers and cargo between London and Adelaide and around the Australian coast.

Customs House

Customs House

Customs House, Port Adelaide. This view shows the Customs House on Commercial Road, Port Adelaide, the third Customs building on this site. It was built in 1877-79 in the Victorian Italianate style, next to the earlier Institute building (1874-76). Originally the two buildings were separated by a laneway but they were later joined together. The Customs House was designed by Colonial Architect George Thomas Light and originally housed the Marine Board, Surveyors and Harbor Master.

Dunn's Mill, Port Adelaide. This six storey steam flour mill was erected by John Dunn junior and was producing flour by 1866. It was burned down later that same year. Sabotage was suspected and the mill was rebuilt the following year and destoyed by fire again in 1887. Dunn eventually owned eleven steam mills. The mill in this photograph was situated between the Port Adelaide railway yard and Lipson Street.

Looking across the Port River from Birkenhead to Queen's Wharf. Notes on the back of the photograph say "Identification notes by Captain Lee. The name of the ketch in the foreground is not known. The steamer inside this ketch is the SS "Glenelg". Inside the "Glenelg" is the barque "Agincourt". The barque (with painted ports) alongside the wharf is the "Star of India". On the extreme right of the photograph can be seen the tug "Adelaide".

The ship with painted ports alongside the wharf, bow on is the "City of Paris" and the barque outside the "City of Paris "is the "Coorong". The fourth vessel from the left is the brigantine "Odalisk". The fifth vessel shown on the extreme right is not known".

Robinson Swing Bridge, Port Adelaide; opened in 1883. A note on the back of the photograph says "Heming had Wharf Hotel from 1882-1887". The bridge crosses the waterway known as the South Australian Company's Basin which leads into the Port River. The Robinson Bridge replaced the Tam O'Shanter fixed Bridge. In 1880 the bridge's opening was found to be too small so a new bridge was shipped from Derby, England. The new bridge was named after the Governor of South Australia. It could be swung open by two men. It was closed in 1935

Robinson Bridge, Port Adelaide. This swing bridge was built from steelwork shipped from England and was opened at Dock 1 in October 1883. The pivot bridge was 129 feet long and 36 feet wide. It had footpaths on either side. The bridge could be opened by two people using a hand lever. Rails passed over the bridge to allow freight access to the wharves.
