Gregory's Marked Tree

[General description] Two boab trees on the bank of the Victoria River situated in a clearing in light scrub. The one on the right is marked by the a member of the expedition of explorer Augustus Gregory and the visible inscription reads 'Letter in forge'. Several other trees are marked with dates 1855 and 1856 and there is a survey peg and a grave at the site. [On back of photograph] 'Gregory's marked tree / Victoria River / Photographed in 1891 / Near Gregory's camp, 1856. The trees were marked by a member of Gregory's North Australian Expedition in 1856. [General description] This Boab tree on the banks of the Victoria River shows the date, July 2, 1856 carved in its trunk by the expedition artist Thomas Baines who marked the tree with the dates of the arrival and departure of the expedition. This was to serve as a marker in case the expedition ran into trouble. [On back of photograph] 'Gregory's marked tree / Victoria River / Photographed in 1891 / Marked by Gregory's party in 1856 / The trees were marked by a member of Gregory's North Australian Expedition in 1856. Edward Allan Farquhar

Edward Allan Farquhar. Born Le Fevre's Peninsular 4 November 1871 and educated at Mr. S. MacPherson's School, Exeter, and Prince Alfred College. Married Mabel Cranwell in 1896. Began his career working for Crooks and Brooker in 1885. President of the Marine Board until the establishment of the Harbors Board in 1914, when he was appointed Commissioner of the Harbors Board becoming Chairman on the resignation of his predecessor, Arthur Searcy, in 1924. Served as a Councillor, Alderman and Chair of Finance on the Port Adelaide City Council. He died on 3 April 1935.

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Miss Roffe, seen in three quarter view. Her hair is arranged in the style worn by Queen Victoria at the time, parted down the centre and pulled back into a low chignon worn at the nape of the neck. [On back of photograph] 'Charlotte Edwin Roffe- aged 18 in 1836-37 / Photograph of drawing in crayon by the famous Sir Thomas Ewins R.A., used as the basis of Queen Victoria's portraits for the Dominions, in that and succeeding years. The Queen only gave a final sitting. The portrait at Government House, Adelaide is one of the originals by Ewins. Miss Roffe became Mrs. William Searcy.'
