This existed from 1857 - 1921 and had several proprietors during the 1870s including Thomas Hall, W Kidd, William Kimber, J Warland, and R Pepper. One is these men is possibly in the group of people shown in the photograph.

Battunga, home of Robert Davenport (standing on steps) at Echunga. The name is an Aboriginal word for rolling hills. Robert Davenport was a capable watercolourist and South Australian politician. The property was purchased by English settler Robert Davenport in 1843. After his death in 1896 the property remained in the Davenport family until 1914 when it was purchased by Professor William Lowrie, Principal of Roseworthy Agricultural College. The photograph shows a single storey house with a wide verandah with latticed walls verandah walls. A bridge appears on the driveway to the house

[General description] A small girl stands in the road in front of the Hagen Arms Hotel, Echunga. It is a two storey stone building with a wide verandah and balcony with decorative wooden balustrading.This hotel was built around 1857, replacing an inn which was built on the site in 1848. The new hotel was named after English Quaker, Jacob Hagen who was one of the founders of the township.

Identified on the verso as 'Battunga' (the original building), and home of Robert Davenport at Echunga. The painting shows wheat being harvested with the cottage in the middle distance. This appears to be based on an S.T. Gill painting - see B 38999. Notes on the back of the photograph say "The original house at Battunga, Echunga home of Robert Davenport. Mr and Mrs R Davenport arrived in the "Templar" December 1846 and in January 1847 went to this home. The present house (now in possession of Mr L Smith) was erected some years later - 48 -50. The site was the one chosen by George Francis Davenport who arrived in 1840 but at his death in 1843, was taken over by his brother, Robert. The scene shows the hill where wheat grown took the prize in London - 1850? See B38999"

View of a Shell Company petrol tanker parked in front of Colebatch's general store at Echunga. On the back is ' "on view" Dad, Mum, Edith, "Shell driver" '. It is believed that 'Dad' is A.N. Colebatch since his second daughter was Edith (and both Edith and her sister Violet were married in Echunga in 1831 and 1935 respectively). 'Mum' was obviously his wife. According to a newspaper article in 'The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser, Thursday 8 July 1937, page 4, A.N. Colebatch owned the store for 11 years (from approximately 1923 to 1934).

Echunga Sluicing Works on day of opening by the Hon. T. Price, 13 July 1906. During this period the Euchunga Hydraulic Gold Sluicing Company made an attempt to instigate a payable large scale operation by treating the alluvium in bulk. However, this was unsuccessful as the alluvial material was much lower in grade than first epected. The photograph shows Premier Tom Price opening the sluicing works watched by crowds of onlookers
