King William Street, Adelaide, looking south from near the intersection with North Terrace toward the intersection of Rundle Street and Hindley Street. Buildings in the foreground on the eastern side of King William Street are the National Bank and Beehive Corner and on the western side are the English, Scottish and Australian Bank and the Australian Mutual Provident (AMP) Society. The street is busy with horse drawn vehicles and pedestrians. A telegraph pole and wires also dominates the foreground. The Adelaide Town Hall clock tower can be seen in the distance. A banner advertising the play 'Sweet Nell of Old Drury' which was presented at the Theatre Royal, Hindley Street, from 28 April 1902 to 9 May 1902 is visible in high resolution scans. The horse trams are lunch time 'specials', which did not stop, and two pedestrians can be seen running to board the moving tram. Many city workers went home for lunch at this time [additional information provided by a researcher].

Town Hall, King William Street showing the Eagle Chambers on the Pirie Street side. The Town Hall was designed by Wright and Woods and built in 1863-6. Its portico and tower influenced later buildings. The building attached to the Town Hall on the right was originally the Prince Alfred Hotel. Eagle Chambers attached to the left of the Town Hall was built in 1874.

The red hard cover features a relief embossing of a version of the Australian Coat of Arms, and an image of Government House on the front. Handwritten script inside the rear cover reads 'Laddie with love from Auntie Jessie, Adelaide, August /94 [1894]'.

Town Hall, King William Street, east side. Note the verandah on the Prince Alfred Hotel which was erected after 1995. The Town Hall was built in 1863-66 with the portico and tower added later. The Prince Alfred Hotel to the right was finished in 1869. In 1953 the balcony was removed when it became part of the Town Hall Complex

Council Offices and Town Hall

City Council Offices and Town Hall, Port Adelaide. The erection of the Council Offices was commenced in June 1939 and completed in November 1939. The imposing Town Hall on Vincent Street was opened on 29 August, 1866. The foundation stone was laid in 1865 and the clock was imported from London aboard the "Indes" in 1867.

[General description] Moonta's Town Hall is a solid stone building with a corner clock tower and a widows walk. Some men, probably officials stand in front of the building, another man appears to be working on the roof. The Duke is standing on the dais at the Town Hall, Adelaide with the Premier, the Lord Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the City of Adelaide. The Duke can be seen saluting as he acknowledges the cheering after the presentation of addresses. October 12, 1934.

Town Hall, Port Adelaide. Two men, one with a bicycle, are standing on the pavement in front of the building. A billboard is advertising entertainments at the Hall. It was designed by architects Woods and Wright, and the foundation stone was laid by Sir James H. Fisher on 10th June, 1865. It was opened on 29th August, 1866. The clock was imported from London aboard the Indes in 1867.

The South Australian Advertiser, 2 November 1883: page 4 notes that Captain Sweet took a photograph of the interior of the Town Hall during a luncheon for the laying of the foundation stone for the Adelaide Young Men's Christian Association, with Hon. Alexander Hay, President of the Association in the chair. His wife, Agnes Grant Hay nee Gosse, is seated two seats to Alexander's right and Charles Goode is seated four seats to his left.

[General description] View of southern Adelaide from the Town Hall Tower with Victoria Square in the foreground. Parklands, distant suburbs and hills are seen in the distance. On the centre left is the original Supreme Court building (completed in 1851), later to house the Magistrate's Courts. Near the centre is the Rainbow Tavern, Acre 407, Gouger Street, first licensed in 1853. The tall chimney on the right belongs to the Crown Steam Mill (on Mill Street) which was later to become Verco's Mill. In the distance on the south parklands are the rifle butts used by the militia for shooting practice.
