Aboriginal men

Aboriginal men

Two Aboriginal men described in handwriting on verso as "Natives at Cooper's Creek Queensland Border". A researcher has provided the following information: 'There are two men standing in front of native dwellings. The old man on the right was known to all as 'old Baltie' and described as a member of the Innamincka tribe. He was a Yandruwandha man from Nappa Merrie station. A newspaper story and photo depicted him in 1915 leaning against the Dig Tree and stated he saw the explorers, Burke and Wills in 1861. He died approx 1921-23 on Nappa Merrie station when Ted Conrick was managing the station. Before he died he told a person his last wish was to be buried with his people on the traditional burial ground at Barioola waterhole, Cooper Creek. A digitised newspaper report found on Trove stated Baltie's dog had to be shot because it would not allow anyone to approach his body. He belonged to the Yandruwandha tribe' [as does the researcher.]
