General notes

"Mr. and Mrs. John Allen still live in the [Waverley] Park, where I found them on the very day following the fifty-eighth anniversary of their wedding. 'We were married 58 years ago yesterday,' said Mr. Allen, with pardonable pride, 'and we have lived here ever since. My wife is 84, and I am 81. Where do I hail from? Why, Cornwall, of course, and so does my wife. We came out to the colony together in '47, by the Duchess of Northumberland, and here we are together still.' He laughed and looked at Mrs. Allen, who was defying the photographer. 'When I arrived in Adelaide I went to work at Mr. Jaffrey's shop, in Hindley Street; but in '51 I came to Willunga, where my wife was already living. I worked at Delabole slate quarry here for 45 years, and then Mr. George Ware bought it from me.'" The Observer newspaper, 23 January 1915, page 40.
