Historical information

The Cheer-Up Society of South Australia was formed in November 1914 by Mrs Alexandra Seager, with the help of W.J. Sowden, the editor of the Register, and a small band of voluntary women helpers. The avowed object of the Society was 'to promote and provide for the comfort, welfare and entertainment' of soldiers and sailors while in Adelaide. In 1915 the Society opened the Cheer-Up Hut on land made available by the S.A. Railways at the rear of the City Baths; here free meals and entertainment were cheerfully made available by the Society's voluntary helpers to all those 'who took up arms in the cause of the Empire'.
