Historical information

Charles Willcox was born in Somerset in 1843, arrived in South Australia in 1863, and went into partnership with William Everard in 1886 in the Payneham and Paradise Tramway Company, becoming sole owner in 1889. He also purchased the Goodwood and Clarence Park Tramway Company in 1886 and he was major shareholder in John Hill and Company. At one time he was the largest employer in Adelaide. He lost all his money in a financial crash, but went on to amass another fortune. A devout member of the North Adelaide Baptist Church, he was involved in local government from 1884, served two terms as Adelaide mayor (1892-1894) and subsequently became an MP from 1896.
