General notes

Alfred George Carne was born in Samoa. Regimental No. 71, 6th Battalion 'A' Company, Private Carne enlisted in the AIF on 18 August 1914. He was quickly promoted through the ranks, to Sergeant on 28 April 1915, 2nd Lieutenant 9 May 1915, Lieutenant 15 July 1915 and Captain 10 October 1916. After service at Gallipoli Captain Carne served in France and Belgium. On 25 August 1918 he was wounded in action, being gassed and receiving a gunshot wound. On 2 November 1918 he was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry on 23rd August 1918 at Herleville Wood". Carne returned to Australia and was discharged on 27 January 1921, he died in South Australia on 29 January 1973.
