Edward James Wivell, 'Professor of Dancing'

Edward James Wivell arrived in South Australia from Victoria in 1867. He had married Mary Mulready in Victoria in 1863 and they had two children there; Edward (1864) and Mary (1865), Mary died in 1867. After moving to South Australia they had two more children; Edmund Jerome (1868) and Abraham (1869), Abraham died in 1870. Edward was a dance teacher and collector of art, owning 'Black Thursday' and 'The Explorer'. He left South Australia temporarily in 1893 (see Quiz and Lantern, 6 October 1893, pg.5), Edmund taking over his 'Ecole de Dance', but returned by 1909 when he died on 16 December, aged 76.

Album of 38 carte-de-visite and tintype photographs of the Kerr and Collins families. Some are named: 3. Mr E.J. Wivell, teacher of dancing & calisthenics; 28. Grandmother Collins; 31 & 33. John Thomas Collins, wife Margaret and sons Bruce, Walter, Percy and Thomas. (Some photographs taken in Melbourne.) Cover is ornate with metal decoration and brass clasp. The album has the inscription 'To Janet Kerr from her devoted friend William Sutherland as a Christmas Gift 25 December 1865'. The front page has 2 newspaper death notices, for Grace Kerr, daughter of Stair Kerr aged 64 years at Prospect (1917), and William Howard, husband of Eliza Howard, aged 68 years at 'Alsted Farm', Alma. The album bears the owner's name plate 'Mr J.T. Collins, Maitland'.
