Neptune Island Lighthouse

South Neptune Island Lighthouse. A visitor is standing at the base of the lighthouse whilst a man, possibly the Lighthouse Keeper, looks down from its balcony. A horse and cart and its driver are waiting nearby. First erected at the entrance to the Port Adelaide River, it was lit on the 1st of January 1869. It was moved to South Neptune Island, at the entrance of Spencer Gulf, on the 1st of November 1901, where it stood until 1985. In poor condition, it was decommissioned and subsequently acquired by the South Australian Maritime Museum. It is now restored and standing on the dockside at Port Adelaide, having been opened to the public on the 13th of March 1986, in a ceremony attended by Queen Elizabeth II. This Lighthouse was replaced with a round brick tower, and, having being automated in the mid 1990s, is still in operation [ 2007].

South Neptune Island Lighthouse. In 1901 the light tower from the Port Adelaide Entrance was relocated to South Neptune Island. The low elevation of the islands was a hazard to shipping causing several shipwrecks. The major casualty was the "Yandra" which was serving as the lighthouse supply ship at the time of her loss in dense fog.

[General description] Two men, probably the Lighthouse keepers, pose high on the light platform of the Lighthouse. Others, probably officials, employees and family members pose at the base of the tower. Constructed from wrought and cast iron by London firm, Moreland and Sons, this tower was originally located at the entrance to the Port River in Port Adelaide from 1869 to 1901. During 1901 it was relocated, complete with a new light, to South Neptune Island, at the bottom of Cape Spencer. It has since been replaced by a new brick structure and returned to Port Adelaide (in 1984) where it now is part of a Maritime Museum.
