It was a substantial stone building complex and served the district for many years. It was demolished in 1971 and part of the dolomite was used to complete additions to the vestry of the Anglican Christ Church

[General description] Two wings of the Mount Gambier Hospital, the older one being on the right, built circa 1870. The two storey stone buildings are typical of the Victorian era with decorative dressings around doors and windows, towers, cupolas, large ornate chimneys and even a widow's walk. On the left, some of the hospital staff can be seen standing on the verandah. [On back of photograph] 'Mount Gambier Hospital / probably in the eighteen seventies or eighties'.

Photograph of the first Mount Gambier Hospital, which was established in 1869 and demolished in 1971. The building was designed by Government Architect Robert George Thomas between 1867-69. The hospital was built of stone in the Italian gothic style featuring towers and cloistered verandahs. The two storey stately building had two wings and was typical of the Victorian era with decorative dressings around the doors, windows, cupolas, large ornate chimneys and even featured a widow's walk. The foundation stone was laid in February 1867 by James C Lyon. See B 3385 and B 3906.

Christ Church (Church of England), Bay Road, Mount Gambier in 1870. Mount Gambier had been settled for about 11 years when the foundation for Christ Church was laid in 1865. The building, in a simplified Gothic revival style, was designed by WT Gore, a prominent South East Architect and completed in 1866. It is constructed of face dolomite with sandstone dressings and retains an elegant timber lych gate.

Shakespeare Tavern at Mount Gambier, existed from 1868 until July 1885 when it was burnt down in 'suspicious circumstances' see Border Watch (Mount Gambier) Sat. 11th July, 1885, p. 2. Patrons and staff pose on the verandah and in front of the tavern, seated in horse-drawn buggies. In 1882 when this view was taken J.L. Harrison was the licensee.
