Wentworth Hardy was born in New Zealand but educated in England and France before arriving in South Australia in 1865, shortly afterwards joining the Survey Department and in 1868 he accompanied the Surveyor General to Darwin. From 1894 to 1906 he was Inspector of Surveys in Tasmania before returning to South Australia. Charles Burton Hardy was born in Adelaide on the site of the present Adelaide Club, North Terrace, the son of Alfred Hardy, a member of Colonel Light's staff, and Mary Newenham. Educated at St. Peter's College, he married Ellen MacDowell in 1873 and practiced law until a few years before his death.
