Pirie Street

Pirie Street

Pirie Street, north side, 21 April 1936, frontage of building is 19 yards. Site of HC Sleigh's is on the east corner of Ackland Street. HC (Harold Crofton) Sleigh 1867-1933 was responsible for importing kerbside petrol pumps to Australia. He registered the name Golden Fleece after he bought a cargo of oil from a consignee who was unable to pay. He contributed so much to the development of motoring in Australia and was disappointed that he could never drive a car himself due to a leg amputation. The Golden Fleece sign stands on the roof of the bluestone single storey business that has an arched roof over the central doorway. To see the building completed in 1936 see B 6941.

Currie Street, north side, frontage of the Coronation Hotel is 19 yards. An AMSCOL milk van is parked in Currie Street. Right side of the hotel abuts Rosina Street. The Coronation Hotel has had numerous names including London, Neates, Golden Fleece, Crown Inn, Hotel California, Armstrong's Tavern. London and Neates were establishments on this town acre at two earlier times. The proprietor at the time of the photograph was John Frederick Byass.
